Incl. VAT, excl. shipping
This coarse blade set belongs to the Wahl Adore, Admire and Adelar and is meant for coat that a fine blade set struggles to let through. Description
This coarse blade set belongs to the Wahl Adore, Admire and Adelar and is meant for coat that a fine blade set struggles to let through. The teeth are set further apart, so that thick, curly or matted hair gets between the blades more readily. You set the cutting height in five steps, from 0.7 to 3 mm, exactly as on the fine version.
About this blade set
The main misunderstanding first: a coarse blade set does not clip longer. The cutting heights are exactly the same as on the fine version, namely 0.7 mm, 1.3 mm, 1.9 mm, 2.4 mm and 3 mm. The only difference is the tooth spacing. On the coarse blade set the teeth sit wider apart, so that the coat can reach the cutting edge instead of bunching up in front of the blade.
That makes a difference on a winter coat that sits densely packed, on a pony with a curly coat and in places where the hair mats. Where a fine blade set starts to push and snag, a coarse one keeps working. You then have to go back over the same pass less often, which also suits the horse, because the clipper stays on the same spot for less time.
The blade set works with the Wahl 5-in-1 system: one blade with a small lever that shifts the setting, without tools and without changing blades. The cutting width is 46 mm, which keeps the blade set manageable on the neck, legs and shoulders. In Wahl numbers those five settings are called 40, 30, 15, 10 and 9, but those numbers are the brand's own: they do not line up with the numbers on A5 blades from other brands.
The 5-in-1 system is separate from A5 snap-on. Clippers from Aesculap, Andis, the Heiniger Saphir and Opal and the Wahl KM work with A5 and do not take this blade set. Conversely, an A5 blade does not fit an Adelar.
Key benefits
- Wider tooth spacing, so it moves more readily through thick, curly or matted coat
- Five cutting heights in one blade set, from 0.7 to 3 mm
- Less snagging and fewer passes to go over again
- Setting shifted with a small lever, without tools
- A width of 46 mm stays manageable on the neck, legs and shoulders
- Turns a trimmer into a machine that also handles heavier coat
When to choose this product
Choose the coarse blade set if you work with a Wahl Adore, Admire or Adelar and often come across heavier coat: a thick winter coat, ponies with a curly coat, or horses that live out and whose hair mats together. It is also the right choice as a replacement for a worn coarse blade set.
If you mostly deal with an ordinary coat and it is about a tight, even result, the fine blade set is the better choice. If your clipper works with A5 snap-on blades instead of 5-in-1, you do not need this blade set. And if you have to clip a whole horse, you will get on faster with a larger clipper and wider blades.
Fit
This head fits the Wahl Adore, Admire and Adelar, which work with the 5-in-1 system; it does not fit clippers with A5 snap-on blade sets or with screw-on blades. The teeth sit further apart than on the fine head, but the cutting heights are the same: 0.7, 1.3, 1.9, 2.4 and 3 mm. So a coarse head does not clip longer. With a cutting width of 46 mm it stays manageable on the neck, legs and shoulders.

Expert advice
Brush the horse thoroughly before you start and only clip on a dry coat. Oil the blade set before you begin and then regularly while clipping: that keeps it cooler and extends the life of the cutting edge. Afterwards, blow or brush the hair out from between the teeth and store the blade set dry.
In matted areas, work in short passes and do not force it. If the blade set still jams, first work through the mat by hand or with a comb before you clip again. For the tight finishing work that follows, it is better to switch to the fine version from the same range: it leaves a more even surface.
Use & care
Change the setting with the small lever, without tools. Brush the horse thoroughly and only clip a dry coat. Oil the head before you start and then regularly while clipping. In matted areas, work in short strokes and do not force it; if the head still jams, first work through the tangle with your hand or a comb.
Afterwards, blow or brush the hair out from between the teeth and store the head dry. For the tidy finish, switch to the fine version.
Frequently asked questions
Does this fit my clipper?
This blade set fits the Wahl Adore, Admire and Adelar, which work with the 5-in-1 system. If your clipper is not listed or you are unsure about the system, get in touch before you order.
Does a coarse blade set clip longer than a fine one?
No. Both blade sets reach exactly the same cutting heights, from 0.7 to 3 mm. The difference lies only in the tooth spacing.
What is the difference with the fine blade set then?
On the coarse blade set the teeth sit further apart. Thick, curly or matted coat therefore gets between the blades more readily. The fine blade set is meant for a standard coat and for a tight finish.
Does this blade set fit an Aesculap, Andis or Heiniger?
No. Those clippers work with A5 snap-on blades, a different system. A 5-in-1 blade does not fit an A5 clipper and an A5 blade does not fit an Adelar.
Can I also finish off with the coarse blade set?
You can, but the result looks less even. For the final finish it is better to switch to the fine version.
How do I look after this blade set?
Oil before and during clipping, clear the teeth of hair after use, and store the blade set dry.
Why do the setting numbers not match my other blades?
Wahl uses its own numbers for the 5-in-1 system. They are not comparable with the same-named numbers on A5 blades from other brands. So always look at the millimetres.
