Pick-up Bits & Curb Gag Bits – Extra lift, control and finesse when you need more support
For horses that gain strength during riding, become heavy in the hand, dive on the forehand, or require additional elevation, pick-up bits and curb gag bits offer a refined, technical solution. At Ruitersport Maddelin, you'll find a carefully selected collection that combines stability, control, and comfort—ideal for riders who want precise control without overloading the horse.
Pick-up bits – Lift, lightness and better balance
A pick-up bit, or gag bit, is used to raise and lift the horse, especially when it becomes low and heavy in the contact. By working upward, this bit helps lift the forehand, allowing the horse to carry more from the hindquarters, and creating a lighter connection. This bit is popular with show jumpers, eventers, outdoor riders with strong or enthusiastic horses, and horses that fall on the forehand during canter or jumps. Pick-up bits are available in rope gags, synthetic or sweet iron versions, single-jointed, double-jointed, and anatomically shaped versions. When used correctly, this bit provides clear yet gentle aids, helping the horse find its balance without creating tension.
Curb Gag – Combines lift with light leverage
The Curb Gag bit is a technically refined bit that combines two actions: gag action (raising and lifting) and leverage (control and limitation). The result is a bit with more finesse and precision than a classic gag, but with controlled action that is ideal for horses that gain strength over fences, need more balance in quick turns, are heavy on the forehand, or require extra support in eventing lines. Our Curb Gags are available in single- and double-jointed versions, anatomical mouthpieces, sweet iron, copper, or stainless steel materials, and in various shank lengths depending on the desired action.
Mouth-friendly, technical quality
Both the pick-up bits and curb gags in our range are made of safe, hypoallergenic materials that help the horse relax in its mouth. The rings glide smoothly, the mouthpiece is precision-finished, and the pressure distribution is designed to ensure harmony, clarity, and comfort.
For show jumping and eventing riders seeking refinement
Pick-up and curb gag bits are primarily used in show jumping, eventing, fast lines with many turns, trail riding with powerful horses, and situations where you need that little bit of extra control. They offer extra control while still allowing plenty of freedom of movement in the neck and spine.
Personal advice on selection and adjustment
These bits require proper knowledge and adjustment. We're happy to help you choose the right breaking, the best material, the appropriate size, the right type of cheekpiece, and the right rein configuration or gag straps. This way, your horse will remain comfortable, stable, and relaxed, even when you need a little extra control.
