Product Information
The BR stirrup covers are neoprene sleeves you slide over your stirrups before you run them up. They keep the metal of the stirrup away from the leather, so that your saddle picks up no scratches and no dull patches on the sweat flaps. Handy when lungeing, in transport and when putting your saddle away. Available in several colours and in 11 cm, 12 cm or XL.
About this stirrup cover
A stirrup that is run up rests against the sweat flap of your saddle. Every time you lift the saddle, set it on a rack or slide it into a saddle bag, that metal rubs across the same small piece of leather. Scratches show at once, but the problem that creeps up on you is the dull patches: the leather loses its shine there and takes on a different texture, and that does not come back with cleaning. A cover over the stirrup takes that contact away.
The cover is made of 100 per cent neoprene: a soft, springy synthetic rubber that encloses the stirrup completely without pressing hard against the leather. You slide the cover over the stirrup first and then run the stirrup up. There is nothing more to it; no hook-and-loop, no buckle, no knot. That is also why it is something you simply do in the yard while you untack, without it costing time.
You use the covers at three moments. When lungeing, when the stirrups are run up and secured and still move with your horse's trot. In transport, when the saddle lies in a car or a saddle case and every bump in the road carries through into the leather. And in storage, when the saddle stands for weeks on a rack with the stirrups run up. In the first two cases it is about rubbing; in the third about a stirrup that always presses on exactly the same spot.
The covers come in several colours: black, brown, navy, princess blue, turquoise, bright pink and florid red. Not every colour exists in every size. Black comes in 11 cm, 12 cm and XL; navy and florid red in 12 cm and XL; brown, bright pink and princess blue only in 12 cm; turquoise only in XL. Colour and size are therefore tied to each other, and it pays to establish your stirrup size first and then look at what there is in that size. The design is registered.
Honestly about the limits: one cover fits one stirrup size. Too small and it will not go over; too large and it slips off when you run the stirrup up. And the cover protects the leather where the stirrup rests, not the rest of your sweat flap: if your saddle rubs somewhere else, this is not the answer. What the manufacturer does not specify is the thickness of the neoprene, the weight, the washing instructions and whether the covers are supplied singly or per pair.
