Product Information

The Heiniger 31F/15 blade set is a screw-on blade set that clips at 1-2 mm. The 31F bottom blade determines that cutting height and the F stands for fine. You screw the set onto a Heiniger Xperience, Xplorer or Progress. Intended for riders, grooms and carers who want to finish a fine-coated horse short and evenly.

About this blade

A screw-on blade set consists of two separate blades that you fix onto the head of your clipper with screws. The bottom blade is the fixed comb that lies against the coat, the top blade moves across it. Because you tighten the blade tension yourself, you keep control over how tightly the pair runs.

At Heiniger the first number is the bottom blade, and therefore the cutting height. The letter F belongs to that bottom blade and means fine: it halves the cutting height. Where a 31/15 stays at 2-4 mm, this 31F/15 clips at 1-2 mm. So you leave less hair and get a crisper line.

The second number, here the 15, is the moving top blade. That does not change the cutting length. This is why the 31F/15 and the 31F/23 both give the same 1-2 mm.

Heiniger runs two blade systems side by side, and that is where orders most often go wrong. The Xperience, the Xplorer and the Progress work with screw-on blades such as this set. The Saphir, the Opal and the Onyx work with snap-on blade sets that you change without tools. A screw-on blade set does not fit such a snap-on machine.

Oil is no side issue on clipper blades. A thin layer on the blades before you start, and then every few minutes while clipping, keeps the pair cool and smooth. Blades running dry get hot, start pulling at the coat and wear out faster. After the clip, brush away the hair and dirt, apply a fresh thin layer of oil and store the blades dry. You will find Heiniger clipper oil with us in the maintenance range.

If you notice the clipper working harder, stripes left in the coat or hair being pulled, the blades are blunt. Have them resharpened through our sharpening service instead of tightening the blade tension further. Hand them in properly cleaned, in the shop or by post, and allow one to two weeks.

Choose the 31F/15 if your clipper works with screw-on blades and you want to finish a horse with a fine or clean coat short: a clip that looks crisp and where you want to mark out sharp lines. Also handy as a second pair alongside your standard blades, so you can change length during the same clip.

If you would rather leave more coat on, for instance on a horse that is out a lot or lives in a cold stable, the 31/15 and 31/23 with 2-4 mm are the sets to go for. For a dirty or rough coat on cattle that is the 21/23, for styling work the 35/17 or the fine 35F/17. If it has to be shorter still, the 53/23 goes down to 1.0 mm. If you have a Heiniger Saphir or Opal, you do not need screw-on blades but snap-on blade sets.

Screw the set onto the clipper and set the blade tension. Put a thin film of oil on the teeth before the clip and repeat every few minutes; if the blades feel warm, you have waited too long.

Afterwards, brush the hair away, oil again and store the set dry. If lines remain or you have to push, do not tighten further but have the blades sharpened; hand them in properly cleaned.

Does this fit my clipper?
This screw-on blade set fits the Heiniger Xperience, the Xplorer and the Progress. It does not fit the Heiniger Saphir, Opal and Onyx, because those work with snap-on blade sets. If your clipper is not listed here, do get in touch with us before you order.

How short is 1-2 mm?
Short. You are left with a thin, even coat in which marked-out lines stay crisp. A standard set of 2-4 mm leaves noticeably more hair.

What does the F in 31F mean?
The F belongs to the bottom blade and means fine. On screw-on blades it halves the cutting height: a 31/15 gives 2-4 mm, this 31F/15 gives 1-2 mm.

What is the difference with the 31F/23?
The bottom blade is the 31F in both cases, so the cutting height is the same: 1-2 mm. The difference is in the moving top blade, and that does not change the cutting length.

Can I have these blades sharpened?
Yes. We sharpen blades of all brands and all machines. Bring them in properly cleaned or send them to us; the turnaround is one to two weeks.

How often should I oil while clipping?
Apply oil before you start and repeat every few minutes. Blades that feel warm are the signal that you have waited too long.

Is this set also suitable for cattle?
This set is intended for horses with a fine, clean coat. For cattle with a dirty or rough coat the 21/23 is the set to use; for styling work on horses and cattle that is the 35/17.
