Product Information

The Sprenger ULTRA fit EXTRA GRIP spur 40 mm is a stainless steel rowel spur with a large 9-point rowel. It was developed for riders who want to refine their leg aid clearly and precisely, for instance on a horse that answers the leg only a little. Sprenger positions this version as the more precise and stronger alternative when blunt spurs do not give enough effect.

About these spurs

The large rowel has nine rounded points. With rowel spurs, shape and diameter help determine how the spur acts: the thinner, smaller and more pointed the rowel, the more concentrated the contact. A larger, rounder rowel spreads that contact out instead.

The EXTRA GRIP rubber coating around the spur arms does two things. It gives extra grip on your riding boot, so the spur is less likely to slip, and it limits the friction of the stainless steel against the boot leather. The rubber used is sturdy, hard-wearing and easy to clean.

The Balkenhol fastening is likewise designed with a stable and comfortable position in mind. The smaller strap loop and the centre bridge set further outwards allow the spur strap to run along the inside of the riding boot.

The spurs are made of HS stainless steel and produced in Germany. The spur arms can be bent carefully, so you can adjust them individually to the width of your foot and your riding boot.

With this version, keep the two lengths clearly apart. The official Neck Size is 40 mm. If Sprenger measures the spur neck from the riding boot, the length is 45 mm. That difference also counts at competitions: Sprenger states that this version is not permitted under the German LPO rules, because the measurement from the boot is greater than 40 mm.

With a rowel spur, check regularly that the rowel can keep turning freely; hair and dirt gather easily between the rowel and the spur neck. Spur straps are not included.

This version is mainly of interest when a blunt spur does not give a clear enough reaction. The 9-point rowel makes it possible to give the aid more precisely. For a sensitive horse that already answers a small leg aid easily, a softer blunt spur or a model with a wider, rounder rowel may be more suitable.

Check the rowel regularly. Hair, sand and dirt between the rowel and the spur neck can stop the rowel turning freely. So clean the spurs after use if needed, with water and a mild cleaning agent.

Who is it for? For riders looking for a quality rowel spur for a precise and clearer leg aid.

When do you use it? When a horse answers the leg only a little and a blunt spur does not give enough effect.

Which disciplines? Suitable within disciplines and training situations in which the use of this type of rowel spur is permitted. For use in competition, always check the rules in force.

When is an alternative better? With sensitive horses, or horses that answer the leg aid very easily, a less precise spur design may be more suitable. If you are looking for a competition spur that has to stay within a set length, check the measurement from the boot and not only the stated Neck Size.

1. What is the length of these Sprenger spurs? The Neck Size is 40 mm. The Neck size measured from boot is 45 mm. These are two different ways of measuring, and both measurements matter when choosing a spur.

2. Which horses are these 9-point spurs suitable for? Sprenger developed this version for horses that answer the leg aid only a little. The 9-point rowel allows a more precise action than a blunt spur.

3. What does the EXTRA GRIP rubber coating do? The rubber gives extra grip on the riding boot and helps keep the spur from slipping easily. It also limits the friction between the metal and the boot leather.

4. Are these Sprenger spurs permitted under the LPO rules? No. Sprenger states that this version is not permitted under the German LPO rules because the measurement taken from the riding boot is 45 mm and is therefore greater than 40 mm.

5. Are the spur straps included? No. The spur straps are not included and have to be provided separately.
