With normal, soft contact, the mouthpiece remains flexible and gentle in the horse's mouth. When the horse becomes strong or leans on the hand, the mouthpiece temporarily locks at a certain angle and briefly acts like a straight bar. As soon as the pressure decreases, the bit becomes supple again.
