Brush the coat out thoroughly first. Sand and mud between the teeth make a blade set go blunt faster than the clipping itself does. Oil the blade set at the start of the session and repeat that regularly while you are working: oil keeps the teeth cool and lets them run smoothly over each other. Brush the hairs away afterwards and store the clipper dry.

Lay the cord so that it does not end up under the horse or against its legs, for instance over your shoulder. If you do several horses one after another, keep a second A5 blade set on hand so the first can cool down. Extra blade sets, clipper oil and our sharpening service are part of the same range.

Choose the Saphir CORD when you clip in a fixed place and have a socket within reach. You are then never dependent on a battery level, which is handy on long clips or with several horses in one day.

If you would rather be able to work free of a cable, out in the field or away from home, the cordless Heiniger Saphir with two batteries from our range is the better choice: the same A5 blade sets, but on battery. If you are only looking for a machine for the head, ears and legs, a compact trimmer is handier to hold.

Which blades or blade sets fit this clipper?
The Saphir CORD works with A5 snap-on blade sets. Blade sets for the Saphir and for the Heiniger Opal are interchangeable with each other. If you are unsure about a particular blade set, get in touch before you order.

Do Heiniger screw-on blades fit this clipper?
No. Screw-on blades belong to machines such as the Xperience, the Xplorer and the Progress. The Saphir works exclusively with snap-on blade sets.

What is the difference with the cordless Saphir?
This version runs on mains power and so needs no battery. The cordless Saphir in our range works with two batteries and gives more freedom of movement. The blade sets are the same.

Can I clip a whole horse with this?
Yes. The cut you are left with depends on the A5 blade set you fit: from 0.25 mm for very short to 6.3 mm when you want to leave more hair.

What does the W on a blade set mean?
The W stands for wide, a broader cutting path. That covers more surface per stroke, which gets you on faster over a horse's body.

What is a red line blade set?
That is Heiniger's newer version of the #10, #15, #30 and #40: optimised grind, specially hardened and chrome-finished, which limits heat build-up.

How do I maintain this clipper?
Clean the blade set after every use, oil it regularly while clipping and store the machine dry. Have blade sets sharpened as soon as they move more slowly through the coat.
