Between two sizes? We usually recommend the larger size, unless stated otherwise on the product. In our experience, Italian brands (such as Animo, Cavalleria Toscana and Vestrum) tend to come up small.

Rugs

How to measure your horse: using a soft tape measure, measure from the centre of the chest, over the point of the shoulder, horizontally along the body to the furthest point of the hindquarters. This is the total length.

Always check the brand's size chart. A rug size in cm (for example 125 or 145) is the back length for most brands, and how it converts to feet differs per brand. Some brands, such as Bucas, also measure differently. That's why every rug comes with the brand's own size information.

Product Information

The Schockemöhle Pittsburgh without elastic is an anatomical dressage girth in soft cow leather, for saddles with long girth straps (billets). Its crescent shape leaves room at the elbows, and the wider, firmer centre spreads pressure across the chest. With no elastic, you set the tension entirely with the buckles. A plain, classic leather girth for everyday riding.

About this dressage girth

Officially this model is the Dressage Girth Pittsburgh from Schockemöhle Sports. It is a short girth: you fasten it to the long billets of a dressage saddle, so the buckles sit under the saddle flap and away from your leg. Schockemöhle describes the shape as a moon shape with an anatomical function. The girth is made of 100% cow leather with metal fittings.

At the front, level with the elbows, the girth curves backwards. This gives the front legs room to move freely. Towards the middle it becomes wider and firmer, spreading pressure over a larger part of the chest.

The brand does not list elastic for this model, unlike the Pittsburgh Stretch. So the girth does not give as you tighten it: the tension you set with the buckles is the tension you get. Some riders prefer to work that way. The solid roller buckles are softly padded, loops keep the ends of the billets in place and there is a D-ring with a hook-and-loop tab. Schockemöhle does not say what the ring is for.

Torn between the two Pittsburgh models at Maddelin? Shape, leather and buckles are comparable. If you want some give on both sides, choose the Stretch. If you want a fixed girth without elastic, this is your model.

A girth without elastic needs a little more care when tightening. Take it up in small steps, alternating left and right, so the saddle stays centred. Check again after a few minutes of walking and after warming up, and only go up a hole if you need to.

Leather softens with use and care. Give a new girth a thin layer of leather conditioner regularly during the first few weeks, and always let it dry slowly after a wet ride, never on a radiator.

This Pittsburgh suits riders with a dressage saddle, or another saddle with long billets, who want a simple anatomical leather short girth without elastic. At Maddelin it is available in 65 cm.

Schockemöhle gives no care instructions. After every ride, remove sweat and sand with a damp cloth, let the leather dry slowly and treat it with a standard leather conditioner.
