Work with the blade set that matches what you want to achieve. For tidying up the bridle area and the lower legs you usually pick a #10 or a #15; if you want to limit the contrast with the rest of the coat, take a blade set with a higher cutting height such as the #7. Brush the blade set clean between two areas and put a few drops of oil on the teeth. A blade set running dry gets hot, and the horse feels that before you notice it.

The Red line version of the #10, #15, #30 and #40 blade sets is Heiniger's newer version: optimised sharpening, extra hardening and a chrome finish, which makes them heat up less. They fit the same machine. Blunt blade sets are worth having sharpened rather than putting aside. Maddelin sharpens blades and blade sets of all brands; do hand them in properly cleaned.

Choose the Saphir Basic if you mainly do fine work: head, ears, jaw, legs, withers and the lines of a partial clip. For riders who do not clip their horse completely but do want to keep the bridle area and the lower legs neat, this is a logical machine too. The quiet run is a genuine argument with young horses and with horses that have had bad experiences with clipping before.

For a full clip of a winter coat this is not the most obvious choice. For that you are better off looking at the Lister Eclipse, which is cordless but has more mass and a wider blade, or at the mains-powered Lister Fusion when you do several horses one after the other. If you only want to tidy up a whisker or the edge of an ear quickly and you are looking for something smaller still, a trimmer such as the Wahl Pico is enough.

The battery gives a maximum of 120 minutes and is full again in about 60 minutes; the set contains one battery. For the bridle area and lower legs choose a #10 or #15, or a #7 for less contrast. Let an inexperienced horse get used to the sound first while you hold the clipper without clipping.

What does the W on a blade set mean?
The W stands for wide, so a wider cutting width. That lets you get on faster over a larger area. Note: the cutting height of a wide blade set differs from that of the ordinary blade set with the same number.
