Between two sizes? We usually recommend the larger size, unless stated otherwise on the product. In our experience, Italian brands (such as Animo, Cavalleria Toscana and Vestrum) tend to come up small.

Rugs

How to measure your horse: using a soft tape measure, measure from the centre of the chest, over the point of the shoulder, horizontally along the body to the furthest point of the hindquarters. This is the total length.

Always check the brand's size chart. A rug size in cm (for example 125 or 145) is the back length for most brands, and how it converts to feet differs per brand. Some brands, such as Bucas, also measure differently. That's why every rug comes with the brand's own size information.

The table below converts the total length from feet to cm. This conversion is the same for every brand.

Product Information

The Samshield Apolline Premium is a women's competition polo with short sleeves in mesh and a deep V panel at the front. The collar closes with press studs and an invisible zip runs beneath it. For riders who want a pronounced finish in the ring, with crystals on the collar and at the nape. At Maddelin in White Holo and navy.

About this competition polo

With the Apolline Premium, Samshield takes up the classic competition polo and adds two things to it: a deep V panel at the front and a finish you see close up. The V gives a long line across the chest, even when you leave the jacket open. The collar closes with press studs and has a further invisible zip beneath it, so you decide yourself how high the polo closes.

The details sit in the places that stand out in the ring. On the collar is the Samshield crest in crystals, at the nape a Swarovski® star, and the invisible zip is trimmed with a band of ultra-fine Swarovski Rocks. At the back a slit gives freedom of movement when you come forward in the saddle. The sleeves are made in mesh, which makes the polo airier than a model with plain sleeves.

The main fabric is, according to Samshield, a technical Italian weave: breathable, high stretch and quick-drying, with a crease-resistant effect and resistance to pilling. The manufacturer states UPF 50+ with the exception of the mesh for this model; that is its own figure, with no standard or test method alongside it. It describes the care as machine-washable.

What to watch: a deep V panel is a choice, and not for everyone. If you ride a class in which the whole shirt must be white or in which a closed white collar is asked for, the navy version is not an option and you look to White Holo. Mesh sleeves cover less than a plain fabric and ask for a more careful wash programme. And the crystal finish is lovely at a show but surplus to daily training.

Samshield publishes no fibre composition, no fabric weight and no washing temperature for this model.

Take White Holo if this is to be your competition polo for classes where white is asked for, and navy if you also want to wear it at training shows and in free classes. The mesh sleeves make this a model for warm days; for a cool spring show, a long sleeve is the better bet. Close the press studs at the collar and leave the zip beneath it shut when you wear a stock or tie, so the line stays flat under the jacket. Wash the polo inside out so the crystals and the mesh are spared, without fabric softener and not in the tumble dryer. Hang it up instead of folding it.

Choose this polo if you want a short sleeve with a pronounced finish and a deep V panel, and if the crystals on the collar and at the nape add something for you. Samshield designed the model for showjumping, dressage and hunter. If you would rather have a sleeve entirely in mesh without a collar and without press studs, the Samshield Aliosha is the alternative. If you are looking for a quieter short sleeve with a half zip and a white V panel, the Samshield Anne-Gaelle suits you better. If you need long sleeves for a class with white cuffs, look at the Samshield Marina.

What does White Holo mean?

White Holo is the colour name Samshield uses for the white version. It is white with a holographic finish; the manufacturer gives no further technical description of that finish.

How does the collar close?

With press studs, and beneath them there is a further invisible zip at the collar. You can therefore wear the polo half or fully closed.

Does the UPF figure apply to the sleeves as well?

No. Samshield states UPF 50+ with the exception of the mesh, and the sleeves are made in mesh. The manufacturer names no standard or test method.

What is the polo made of?

Samshield speaks of a technical Italian weave but publishes no fibre composition with percentages. As soon as the manufacturer supplies it, it will join the technical features.

Which sizes are there?

At Maddelin, White Holo comes in XS (EU34 - IT38) to XL (EU42 - IT46), and navy in XS, S and M. In the size selector the EU and IT equivalent is shown with every size. Samshield publishes no size guide in centimetres.

May I compete in short sleeves?

In showjumping, article 207.2.3 of the FEI Jumping Rules allows short sleeves, jacket included, with a white collar and a white tie, stock or choker; for children and pony riders the whole shirt must be white. Rules differ by federation, by discipline, by level and by country and change regularly, so check the rulebook of your own federation.

How do I wash the polo?

Samshield states that the model is machine-washable, but gives no temperature; follow the care label in the polo. Wash inside out, leave the fabric softener out and do not use the tumble dryer.
