Between two sizes? We usually recommend the larger size, unless stated otherwise on the product. In our experience, Italian brands (such as Animo, Cavalleria Toscana and Vestrum) tend to come up small.

Rugs

How to measure your horse: using a soft tape measure, measure from the centre of the chest, over the point of the shoulder, horizontally along the body to the furthest point of the hindquarters. This is the total length.

Always check the brand's size chart. A rug size in cm (for example 125 or 145) is the back length for most brands, and how it converts to feet differs per brand. Some brands, such as Bucas, also measure differently. That's why every rug comes with the brand's own size information.

The table below converts the total length from feet to cm. This conversion is the same for every brand.

About this competition shirt

Samshield builds the Anne-Gaelle around two choices you notice in the ring: a short sleeve and a classic waist. That is something other than a close-fitting shirt that clings to the body. The waist falls straight, so the shirt does not ride up in the saddle and you can close it under a jacket without any pull.

The fabric is, according to Samshield, a technical Italian weave that stretches and breathes. The manufacturer also mentions a crease-resistant effect and resistance to pilling. For a shirt that sits in the lorry or over a chair between classes, that is the practical point: it comes out smooth again. Samshield also states UPF 50+ for this model, as a manufacturer's figure; no standard and no test method is given with it.

The finishing stays deliberately quiet. At the front a half invisible zip closes, with a white V panel above it that completes the look under an open collar. On the collar sit a rivet with the Samshield crest and a logo printed in Swarovski® crystals. At the back runs a teardrop-shaped opening that ventilates where you get warmest. Samshield describes the care as machine-compatible.

The limits are easy to name honestly. A short sleeve rules out a number of classes when you need long sleeves with white cuffs. The navy version does have a white V panel, but Samshield does not state the collar colour: where a white collar is required, white is the more reliable choice. And white stays white: stable marks, make-up and horse hair show up on this shirt straight away.

Samshield publishes no fibre composition for this model, and no fabric weight or washing temperature either.

Take white if you mainly ride classes where a white shirt or a white collar is asked for, and navy if the shirt also has to serve for training and warming up. The short sleeve makes this shirt usable from late spring into early autumn; in spring, wear a thin technical layer underneath rather than a heavy jacket over it. Combine it with white breeches and a white stock or tie for a classic picture, or with plain training breeches at home. Wash the shirt inside out so the printed crystals on the collar do not rub against the drum, and leave the tumble dryer alone.

This shirt suits riders who want a quiet, neat shirt rather than an eye-catching model, and who prefer a classic waist to a close-fitting cut. It works for showjumping, dressage and eventing in warm to moderate conditions. If you want sparkling mesh sleeves instead of a plain short sleeve, the Samshield Aliosha is the alternative. If you are looking for a short sleeve with a deep V panel, press studs at the collar and a more pronounced crystal finish, the Samshield Apolline Premium suits you better. If you need long sleeves with cuffs, look at the Samshield Marina.

Put the shirt on and close the half zip as high as you want the look to be; with a stock or tie you close it all the way. Wear the shirt on its own on warm days, or under a show jacket. Does this shirt have short or long sleeves?

Short sleeves. Samshield describes the model on its own product page as a short-sleeved fit with a classic waist.

What is the shirt made of?

Samshield speaks of a technical Italian weave but publishes no fibre composition with percentages. As soon as the manufacturer supplies it, it will join the technical features.

Which sizes and colours are there?

At Maddelin, white in XXS, XS, M and XL, and navy in XS and M. In the size selector the EU and IT equivalent is shown with every size. Samshield publishes no size guide in centimetres.

May I compete in short sleeves?

In showjumping, article 207.2.3 of the FEI Jumping Rules allows short sleeves, jacket included, with a white collar and a white tie, stock or choker. For children and pony riders the whole shirt must be white. Rules differ by federation, by discipline, by level and by country and change regularly: check the current rulebook of your own federation.

Can I wear the navy version in dressage?

The FEI dressage rules say nothing about the shirt itself: article 431 only requires a white or off-white stock or tie. The Belgian rulebook, on the other hand, does require a white shirt, and without a jacket sleeves that cover at least the shoulders. For Belgian dressage classes, white is therefore the better pick.

How do I wash this shirt?

Samshield describes the model as machine-compatible but states no temperature; follow the care label for that. Wash inside out and do not use the tumble dryer, so the printed logo on the collar stays intact.

What is the difference with the Samshield Marina?

The Anne-Gaelle has short sleeves, a half zip and a white V panel. The Marina has long sleeves, a full-length zip down the front and rhinestone buttons at the cuffs.
