Product Information

The Samshield Aliosha is a women's competition polo whose short sleeves are made entirely in mesh set with Swarovski® crystals. At the front the polo closes with an invisible zip, and at the back there is a slit. For riders who want an airy sleeve on a warm competition day without giving up a tidy picture in the ring. At Maddelin in white, in sizes XS to XL.

About this competition polo

Samshield describes the Aliosha as a competition polo that plays with transparency and shine: the sleeves are made entirely in mesh and set with Swarovski® crystals, while the body sits in a smooth technical fabric. That contrast is the whole point of this model. Without a jacket the sleeves catch the light; under a show jacket only the sleeve edge stays visible.

Samshield describes the main fabric as breathable, high stretch and quick-drying, with a crease-resistant effect and no pilling. For a shirt that sometimes stands for hours under a jacket at the arena, that is the difference between staying crisp and going limp. Samshield also states UPF 50+ for this model; that is a manufacturer's figure, not a standard or test method that it documents.

The fastening is an invisible zip at the front, trimmed with a band of Swarovski Crystal Fabric. There are no buttons or press studs that show through under a jacket. On the chest sits the Samshield crest in crystals, and at the back a slit gives freedom of movement when you come forward in the saddle. Samshield states no separate collar type for this model: the polo closes up to the neck by way of the zip.

What you take into account: mesh is slightly see-through. That is intended on this model, but it also means the sleeves cover less than a plain fabric, and that you handle them more carefully in the washing machine. White is moreover sensitive to stable marks and to make-up at the neck. Finally, a short sleeve does not open up every class: in showjumping, long sleeves with white cuffs remain the surest choice when you ride with a jacket.

Samshield publishes no fibre composition, no fabric weight and no washing instructions with a temperature for this model. What appears on the page is therefore limited to what the manufacturer states itself.

This model comes into its own at summer shows and in warm indoor arenas, where the mesh sleeves ventilate and the main fabric dries quickly. Under a jacket the polo works too, but then you no longer see the mesh: anyone buying the model mainly for the look is better off wearing it on days when the ground jury allows riding without a jacket. Combine it with white breeches from the Samshield range and a white stock or tie for a classic competition picture. Handle the mesh and the crystals with care: wash inside out, without fabric softener, and no tumble dryer. Store the polo on a hanger rather than folded, so the crystals do not rub against each other.

Choose the Aliosha if you want a short sleeve that also looks finished without a jacket, and if the crystal mesh adds something for you. That makes it suited above all to warm competition days in showjumping, dressage and eventing, and less to cool spring shows. If you would rather have a short sleeve with a collar on press studs and a V panel in plain fabric, the Samshield Apolline Premium suits you better. If you are looking for the same crystal mesh but in a longer sleeve with a magnetic fastening, the Samshield Anouchka is the alternative. For a class in which the whole shirt must be white, make sure you take the white one.

Put the polo on and close the invisible zip at the front. Wear it as a shirt on its own on warm days or under a show jacket. Samshield states that the model is machine-washable, but gives no washing temperature: follow the care label in the polo for that. Wash inside out to spare the mesh and the crystals, without fabric softener, and let the polo dry in the air rather than in the tumble dryer.

Are the mesh sleeves see-through?

Yes. Samshield makes the sleeves entirely in mesh, and mesh is slightly see-through. The body of the polo sits in a smooth, non-transparent fabric.

Which size should I take?

The polo follows the Samshield women's sizes. At Maddelin the range runs from XS (EU34 - IT38) to XL (EU42 - IT46); the EU and IT size is shown each time in the size selector. Samshield publishes no size guide in centimetres.

What is the shirt made of?

Samshield states no fibre composition for this model. As soon as the manufacturer supplies it, it will join the technical features.

May I compete in short sleeves?

In showjumping, article 207.2.3 of the FEI Jumping Rules allows short sleeves, with a white collar and a white tie, stock or choker. If you ride without a jacket because the ground jury permits it in very warm weather, the shirt must have sleeves; sleeveless is ruled out. Rules differ by federation, by discipline, by level and by country and change regularly, so check the current rulebook of your own federation.

Is this polo suitable for dressage?

The FEI dressage rules prescribe nothing about the shirt itself: article 431 only requires a white or off-white stock or tie. The Belgian rulebook is more concrete and requires a white shirt, with sleeves that cover at least the shoulders when no jacket is worn. A white short sleeve meets that; check your federation's rulebook.

How do I wash the crystals and the mesh?

Samshield states that the model is machine-washable, but gives no temperature. Follow the care label in the polo for that. Wash inside out, leave the fabric softener out and do not use the tumble dryer.

What is the difference with the Samshield Anouchka?

The Aliosha is a short-sleeved polo with sleeves entirely in mesh and an invisible zip at the front. The Anouchka has crystal mesh on the sleeves but a smooth main fabric with a half-invisible magnetic fastening, and there Samshield limits the UPF figure to the non-mesh sections.
