Flex-On Safe-On Junior Inclined Grip

The Flex-On Safe-On Junior Inclined Grip is a safety stirrup that Flex-On drew to a child's scale. The supple elastomer outer arm opens at the bottom in a fall and lets the foot go; afterwards you click it back yourself. The sloped tread with Grip insert keeps the foot in place. A pair weighs 550 g, so a child or pony rider rides with kit that is matched to their own weight.

About this stirrup

Why a separate junior stirrup. Flex-On puts it plainly itself: children do not yet have the muscle strength of older riders and therefore look for support in their stirrups more often. That is why the Safe-On has been drawn to a child's scale instead of simply made smaller. The engineering is the same as on the adult Safe-On, but the dimensions and the arm are matched to a lighter weight.

The mechanism. The outer arm is a supple elastomer arm that also acts as the safety fuse itself. Once pressure comes on it, the arm opens at the bottom and the foot comes free; afterwards you click the arm back on at the bottom and your child can mount again. That arm opens at a lower force than the 40 kg Flex-On states for the adult version. Flex-On notes itself that no mechanism can ensure that the arm opens in every situation. The fuse is a part you replace separately once worn; a separate arm kit exists for the Safe-On Junior.

Mind the rider's weight. The stirrup is supplied with a lower-density arm, meant to be able to open at any child's weight. Flex-On states that this arm sometimes opens too easily for riders over 31 kg, and therefore offers a higher-density arm. If your child weighs more than 31 kg, ask about that firmer arm. Once your child has outgrown the junior stirrup, you move to the adult Safe-On.

Tread and frame. Flex-On offers the Safe-On Junior with a sloped tread and a Grip insert; that is the combination in the name. The sloped surface follows the natural drop of the heel. The insert is a wear part and stays replaceable. The frame is a single branch in polyamide, which is why a pair weighs only 550 g. The stirrup leather slot sits offset and at an angle, so that each stirrup turns under the correct foot: there is therefore a left and a right stirrup. Under the tread sits the shock-absorbing elastomer system, which takes up part of the vibrations from the horse's movement. For cross-country there is a junior version of the endurance cage, which stops the foot sliding through the stirrup.

With us this stirrup comes in the size Junior and in the colour Black. The magnetic stickers of the Safe-On also fit the Safe-On Junior, so an accent can still be added later.
