BR Rubber Ring for Safety Bar

Feel the ring on your stirrup between your fingers before you order. If the rubber feels supple and springs back, nothing needs doing yet. If it is hard, tacky, or you see fine cracks at the attachment, replace it. Replace left and right together: two rings of different age give different tension. Do not store your stirrups in full sun or next to a radiator; rubber ages mainly through ultraviolet light and heat. If you ride with young riders, check before every lesson, because they will not notice a weakened ring themselves. Keep a spare pair in your bag when you go to a competition.

Choose this separate ring when you ride with a classic safety stirrup with a rubber release and only want to refresh the rubber, while the leather loop is still supple. That is the most common situation: the rubber gives up first. It is much used by riders and riding-school managers who put young or beginning riders on a Fillis safety stirrup, in every discipline. If the loop is split, stretched or gone, you take the BR rubber ring with leather loop, which holds both parts. And if you ride with a modern safety stirrup whose outer arm releases on its own instead of closing with a rubber ring, you do not need this part.

Take the old ring off the bottom of the outer arm and off the stirrup eye. Slide the top of the new ring over the stirrup eye and then stretch it over the bottom of the outer arm, so that it stands taut across the opening. New rubber is stiff, so this takes some force. Then check that the ring lies flat, is not twisted anywhere, and fully encloses both ends. Store your stirrups dry and out of full sun.

What is the difference with the rubber ring with leather loop?

This item is the ring on its own. With the BR rubber ring with leather loop you also get the loop that holds the top of the ring against the stirrup eye. If you only need new rubber, this separate ring is the right choice.

Where exactly does this ring sit on the stirrup?

On the outer side. On a classic safety stirrup the outer arm is open; the ring runs from the bottom of that arm up to the stirrup eye and holds the opening closed while you ride.

How do I know my ring is worn?

Feel it. Supple rubber that springs back is in order. Hard, tacky or showing fine cracks at the attachment means replacing it. A ring that has stretched and hangs slack over the opening is finished too.

Will this ring fit my stirrup?

It is meant for a classic safety stirrup with a rubber release, such as the BR Fillis with article number 121010. With a stirrup of another make, it is best to lay the old ring beside it before you fit the new one, because the build of the outer arm differs.

How often should I replace it?

The manufacturer gives no period for that. It depends on use, sunlight and storage. Checking at every big tack clean is a workable rule.

Do I get one or two?

The manufacturer does not document the pack contents. Ask us before you order if you definitely need a pair.

Can I ride with a stirrup whose ring is missing?

No. Without the ring the outer arm of the stirrup is open and there is nothing holding your foot in place.
