Always check both parts, not just the rubber. Fold the leather loop double: if it cracks or feels like cardboard, it is finished, even if the rubber still looks good. Then look specifically at the hole in the loop, because that is where it tears. Replace left and right together, so that the tension on both stirrups is the same. Keep your stirrups dry and out of direct sunlight; ultraviolet light and heat age rubber faster than use does. When fitting, rub the new loop lightly with leather grease and it will stay supple longer. Do not let young riders decide this for themselves and check it yourself.

Choose this set when you ride with a classic safety stirrup with a rubber release and want to renew both the rubber and the leather loop, or when you have lost the loop. It is also the sensible choice if you simply want a complete spare part in your competition bag, because a loop that breaks at the showground cannot be bodged with anything else. Discipline makes no difference; you see these stirrups mostly with young and beginning riders, in the riding school and out hacking. If only your rubber is hard or split and the loop is still good, you take the separate BR rubber ring.

First take the old ring and the old leather loop off the stirrup. Thread the new loop through the upper end of the ring and hook it over the stirrup eye. Then stretch the bottom of the ring over the bottom of the outer arm, so that the release stands taut across the opening. New rubber is stiff, so this takes some force. Check that the ring is not twisted anywhere and that the loop lies flat. Storing is done dry and out of full sun.

What is the difference with the separate BR rubber ring?

This set includes the leather loop. With the separate ring you get only the rubber. If you need new rubber alone, take the separate ring; if the loop is finished or lost as well, this set is the right choice.

What is the leather loop for?

It holds the upper end of the rubber ring against the stirrup eye, so that the ring stays in place and the release is under tension.

How do I know my leather loop is worn?

Fold it double. Supple leather is in order; leather that cracks, tears or feels like cardboard is finished. Look above all at the hole, because that is usually where the tear starts.

Will this set fit my stirrup?

It is meant for a classic safety stirrup with a rubber release, such as the BR Fillis with article number 121010. With a stirrup of another make, it is best to lay your old parts beside it before you fit the new ones.

Do I get one or two?

May I ride with a worn release?
