Who it is for and when. For the rider who, outside the really cold months, wants one thin glove all year round with plenty of feel on the rein, and who is happy for colour and finish to show. Daily training, showjumping, hacking and work at the yard. Roeckl lists no lining and no ROECK-PROOF® layer for this model; for cold weather, choose another model.

How the Malta differs from four other Roeckl models at Maddelin. The Malta has ROECK-GRIP® on both the back of the hand and the palm — one material all round, like the Lona and the ROECK-GRIP. The Lusita has SUPREMA by ROECKL on the back of the hand and ROECK-AIR in the palm, with Swarovski crystals on the fastening. The Laila 2 has suntan™ Mesh on the back of the hand with a MICRO-AIR palm. The Jineta has ROECK-PROOF® EVO Denali, which Roeckl calls windproof, and EVO Lining of 90 g/m², the Julia ROECK-PROOF® Ural and a laminated ROECK-GRIP® palm. So if you are looking for a model for the cold months, look at those last two; if you want ROECK-GRIP® all round for the milder months, the Malta is the choice. Roeckl makes the Malta up to size 10.5, but Maddelin carries it in sizes 6 to 7.5.

Each discipline has its own rules. Gloves are compulsory in dressage: internationally in white, off-white or the colour of your jacket, and under Paardensport Vlaanderen in white, buff or the colour of the jacket. This version is two-tone navy with caramel, and that combination falls outside white, off-white and buff, so for the dressage arena this is not the right pair; choose a white model there, such as the ROECK-GRIP in white. In the eventing dressage test, black is also explicitly permitted. In showjumping and cross-country, gloves are not compulsory but are permitted, and there is no colour requirement; the same applies to training, hacking and yard work. In driving they are compulsory, for the groom as well. Under the LRV they are optional, with white preferred for dressage. Rules differ by federation, discipline, level and country and change regularly: check the current rules of your own federation.

At Maddelin the Malta comes in one colour combination — navy with caramel — and in four sizes: 6, 6.5, 7 and 7.5. Roeckl makes the model up to 10.5; Maddelin does not carry the sizes above 7.5.

Measure the circumference around your knuckles, excluding the thumb, with a loose fist, and divide by 2.7. The four sizes Maddelin carries thus come out at around 16.2 cm, 17.6 cm, 18.9 cm and 20.3 cm.

Roeckl lists no cut such as COMFORT-CUT for the Malta, but it does list an easy closure. According to the manufacturer the sizes are a guide, with the requirement that a riding glove should fit like a second skin. If in doubt, do not choose the size your hand slides into most easily.

Put the Malta on with dry hands and work the material on finger by finger until your fingertips sit in the tips. Then close the easy closure.

If you also ride in winter, this is not the model to keep using all year round. Roeckl lists no lining and no windproof back of the hand for the Malta. For the cold months, take a second pair, such as the Jineta or the Julia.

If the label allows machine washing, use a laundry bag, no fabric softener, and let them dry flat. Put them on a few times while they dry, and they will keep their shape.

In the international competition arena, a manufacturer's logo of up to 3 cm² is permitted. A sponsor logo on gloves is not.

Roeckl lists no lining for the Malta but does list touchscreen compatibility: a model for training and yard work in mild to warm conditions, which you can keep on for a phone call. Pull it on fully until your fingertips sit in the tips and then fasten the easy closure.

Navy and caramel sit side by side on the same glove. In its brand-wide washing guidance, Roeckl asks you to sort by colour and use a laundry bag, so do not wash the pair with light-coloured laundry.

Roeckl publishes no model-specific instructions; the label inside the glove is what counts, and machine washing goes with the label machine washable. If your pair carries that label: close any hook-and-loop fastening neatly first, do not turn the glove inside out, delicate cycle or 30 °C, no fabric softener, no tumble dryer, dry flat at room temperature.

What is the Malta designed for?

For everyday riding and training in mild to warm conditions, and for work at the yard. Roeckl lists no lining for this model.

What material is on the palm?

ROECK-GRIP®, the same as on the back of the hand. That is a Roeckl material name, not a fibre composition; the manufacturer does not publish percentages and the label inside the glove states them.

What is the largest size in this model?

At Roeckl, 10.5. At Maddelin the range runs from 6 to 7.5; the larger sizes are not part of the range for this model.

Is a navy-caramel glove suitable for a dressage competition?

Gloves are compulsory in dressage in white, off-white or the colour of your jacket; Paardensport Vlaanderen specifies white, buff or the colour of the jacket. What is the difference from the Lona?

The same material on both zones, but a different range and a different design: the Lona belongs to the women's line and stops at 8.5, while the Malta goes up to 10.5 at the manufacturer.

Can the Malta go in the washing machine?
