Who it is for and when. For the rider with a smaller hand who wants to keep a glove on during hot days rather than taking it off. Summer training, hacks, yard work and competing in the summer months. Not tied to one discipline: dressage, showjumping and eventing.

What sets this model apart. This model combines a mesh weave on the back of the hand, suntan™ Mesh, with a MICRO-AIR palm. The Laila Suntan also has an open mesh back of the hand, but Maddelin only carries it in size 6. Another summer model is the Lusita, with its own combination of materials and crystals on the fastening. The Malta uses the same grip material on both zones, in two-tone versions. For the cold months, the Jineta and the Julia are ready, each with a back of the hand from the ROECK-PROOF® line.

When another model is a better fit. If you ride in autumn and winter, choose the Jineta or the Julia: an open mesh structure on the back of the hand is the very opposite of a closed winter fabric. If you want a closed back of the hand with the same grip material all round, the Malta is the one. If you are above size 7.5, the ROECK-GRIP® line goes further than this range. And if you want white or off-white for the dressage arena, this pair is ruled out: Maddelin only carries this model in black.

Each discipline sets its own requirement. Gloves are compulsory in a dressage test, internationally in white, off-white or the shade of your jacket, and with Paardensport Vlaanderen in white, buff or the shade of the jacket — so black works there as soon as your jacket is black. The eventing dressage test explicitly permits black, regardless of the colour of the jacket. For a showjumping course and for cross-country, gloves are not compulsory and no colour is prescribed; they are, however, permitted. Driving makes them compulsory again, for the groom as well, which makes a second pair easy to justify. The LRV keeps them optional, with white preferred for dressage. Such requirements vary by federation, discipline, level and country and change over the years: go through the current rules of your own federation.

Maddelin carries four sizes: 6, 6.5, 7 and 7.5. Roeckl does not publish a size range for this item.

You work out the size with the measuring rule Roeckl applies across the brand: the circumference around your knuckles, thumb not included, with a loosely closed fist, divided by 2.7. About 16.2 cm corresponds to size 6 and 17.6 cm to 6.5.

Choose this pair as a summer glove alongside a lined winter pair, not as your only glove for the whole year. Roeckl lists no lining and no windproof layer for this item; for cold mornings, the Jineta and the Julia are in the range.

If your pair carries the machine washable label, it can go in the machine, in a laundry bag as Roeckl recommends across the brand; without that label, it cannot.

Wash on a delicate cycle or at 30 °C, without fabric softener, and dry the glove flat at room temperature — not on a radiator and not in the tumble dryer. Put it on a few times while it dries so it regains its shape.

If you ride dressage, bear in mind that in very hot weather the judges can allow riding without a jacket; that does not exempt you from gloves. A white pair in the lorry is handy then: white is on the list both internationally and with Paardensport Vlaanderen, independently of the jacket. Entering the arena without gloves in FEI dressage is a technical fault with a small deduction per judge, not elimination.
