You should still be able to slide two fingers easily under the noseband. Fasten the flash strap looser than the noseband: it sits below the bit and is meant to keep the bit quiet. After adjusting, check that the padding lies flat everywhere and does not curl anywhere, because that is exactly where rubbing starts.

A fixed routine is enough for maintenance. Wipe the leather down after every ride, clean it weekly with saddle soap and then grease it thinly. For a thorough clean, take the straps out of the buckles so you also reach the holes and the folds. Let the padding air-dry, not near a heat source.
