Hang the stirrups so that the open side with the rubber ring points outwards, away from the horse. Swap them around and the construction does not work as intended. Take the ring between your fingers every time you tack up: it should feel supple and sit tight, not hard or stretched. Keep a spare ring and a spare leather tab in your grooming box; a ring that comes loose on the way brings your ride to a halt. Do not store the stirrups in full sun or next to a heat source, because that hardens rubber faster. After a sandy ride, rinse the pad and dry the stirrup afterwards.

This stirrup suits children, young riders and adults with a narrow riding boot who want a stirrup with an open outer side: in the lesson, out hacking and in daily training. If the rider is still working on balance and the foot does not always sit well in the stirrup, this is exactly the type of stirrup meant for that. If you have a wider boot or a larger shoe size, 110 mm is too narrow. Slide the stirrup leather through the eye and hang the stirrup with the rubber ring to the outside. Before every ride, check whether the ring sits tight and supple, whether the leather tab is intact, and whether the stirrup leather and buckle are secure. After the ride, rinse off sand and sweat with water and dry the stirrup. Replace the ring, and the tab if needed, as soon as you notice hardening, cracks or stretch; both are available separately.

How does a Peacock stirrup work?

The outer branch is replaced by a rubber ring, fixed at the top with a leather tab. If a lot of force comes onto that side, the ring releases and the outer side stands open, so the foot can leave the stirrup on that side.

Which side faces outwards?

The side with the rubber ring always hangs outwards, away from the horse. The closed metal branch sits against the horse.

How often should I replace the rubber ring?

That depends on use, sun and sweat; there is no fixed interval. Check the ring every time you tack up and replace it if you see cracks, hardening or noticeable stretch. Separate rings, also with a leather tab, are available on their own.

Has this stirrup been tested or standardised?

Sprenger states no standard and no official testing for this model. So we cannot promise anything about that.

Which size do I need?

This stirrup has a tread width of 110 mm, the children's size at Sprenger. For a wider boot that is too narrow. Measure the sole of your riding boot: it must not jam between the stirrup and the ring, and must not slide sideways either.

Is this a good stirrup for a beginner rider?

This type of stirrup is meant for situations where the foot does not always sit neatly in the stirrup, and the 110 mm size matches smaller shoe sizes. Whether it is the right choice depends on the boot size and on your instructor's advice.

Is there any damping in this stirrup?

No. There is no joint and no shock-absorbing element. If you want that, look at a jointed stirrup.

How do I clean it?

Rinse with water and dry off. Do not leave the rubber ring standing in grease or oil, and do not store the stirrups in full sun.
