A crank noseband tempts you to tighten it too far, precisely because the mechanism makes that easy. Do not. Keep at least two fingers of room between the strap and the nasal bone and use the mechanism to lay the strap evenly and straight, not to pull it closed. Adjust the flash strap looser than the noseband itself: it stabilises the bit and must not tighten the mouth. If you work without a flash strap, unhook it completely rather than letting it dangle.

Wipe the leather dry after every ride, with extra attention to the padded rear of the noseband, where sweat and sand collect. Clean every few weeks with leather soap and afterwards feed with a thin layer of leather balm. Do not buff matt leather with shine products, or you lose the matt finish.

What exactly does a crank noseband do?
It closes at the back with a pull-back mechanism instead of an ordinary buckle, so you tighten the strap evenly and it stays stable in place. The padded rear section spreads the pressure of the closure.

Can I leave the flash strap off?
Yes, the flash strap is removable. Take it off completely in that case.
