Between two sizes? We usually recommend the larger size, unless stated otherwise on the product. In our experience, Italian brands (such as Animo, Cavalleria Toscana and Vestrum) tend to come up small.

Rugs

How to measure your horse: using a soft tape measure, measure from the centre of the chest, over the point of the shoulder, horizontally along the body to the furthest point of the hindquarters. This is the total length.

Always check the brand's size chart. A rug size in cm (for example 125 or 145) is the back length for most brands, and how it converts to feet differs per brand. Some brands, such as Bucas, also measure differently. That's why every rug comes with the brand's own size information.

The table below converts the total length from feet to cm. This conversion is the same for every brand.

Product Information

The Roeckl Lona is the two-tone riding glove from Roeckl's women's line. The back of the hand and the palm are made in ROECK-GRIP®, the same material as in the classic ROECK-GRIP, and Roeckl lists the model as touchscreen compatible with an easy closure at the cuff. At Maddelin in five colour combinations, in sizes 6 to 8.5 with half sizes.

About these riding gloves

The Lona is the model for riders who want the ROECK-GRIP feel in a glove that looks different. Roeckl lists exactly the same material for the Lona as for the classic ROECK-GRIP: ROECK-GRIP® on the back of the hand and ROECK-GRIP® in the palm. Roeckl describes that material as stretchy and says it provides the grip on the rein. It is, however, a material name and not a fibre declaration; the manufacturer does not publish fibre percentages, and the composition is on the label inside the glove.

The difference from the basic model lies in the size range and the finish. Roeckl places the Lona in its women's line and makes it from size 6 to 8.5, whereas the ROECK-GRIP runs up to size 11. If your hand is larger than size 8.5, the Lona is not an option and you will end up with the ROECK-GRIP. The versions are two-tone: at Maddelin these are black with white, black with gold, navy with white, navy with pink, and brown with gold, which Roeckl itself calls mocha with gold. Roeckl's range also includes black with red and viola; those two are not part of Maddelin's range.

Roeckl lists two features. The glove is touchscreen compatible, so your screen responds through the fabric and you can keep your gloves on for a phone call at the yard. And there is an easy closure at the cuff, the quick fastening that secures the glove around the wrist. Roeckl lists no silicone grip for the Lona; for the Weldon it does, as SILICONE-GRIP.

For the competition arena, there is one point to watch with a two-tone glove. Gloves are compulsory in dressage: internationally in white, off-white or the colour of your jacket, and Paardensport Vlaanderen specifies white, buff or the colour of the jacket. Those lists name colours, not colour combinations. Whether a glove with contrasting colour panels falls within them is not stated: put the question to your federation before you enter the dressage arena, or choose a plain model for the test. In showjumping and cross-country there is no colour requirement and gloves are not compulsory, but they are permitted. In driving they are compulsory, for the groom as well. Under the LRV they are optional, with white preferred in dressage. Rules differ by federation, discipline, level and country and change regularly, so check the current rules of your own federation before you enter.

Where the Lona is at home without reservation: daily training, lessons, hacks, jumping and work around the yard. In its sizing advice, Roeckl itself writes that a riding glove should fit like a second skin, because you hold the rein with sensitivity. Roeckl lists no lining for the Lona, so for the coldest months look at the ROECK-GRIP WINTER or the Weldon.

If you compete in dressage, keep a plain pair separately. The colour rules in dressage name white, off-white or the colour of the jacket internationally, and white, buff or the colour of the jacket under Paardensport Vlaanderen; they say nothing about a two-tone glove. For everything outside the test, the Lona is just as usable.

If you often use your phone at the yard, the touchscreen feature Roeckl lists for the Lona is the practical benefit: your gloves stay on.

Measure your hand before you order: with an upper limit of size 8.5, you reach the edge of the range sooner than with the basic model.

If you drive, the rules require gloves for the driver and for the groom. So two pairs in the right sizes.

Who is it for? For riders with a hand circumference up to about 23 cm who want the ROECK-GRIP material in a two-tone version.

When? From spring into autumn, and all year round in an indoor arena. Not for the coldest winter months: Roeckl lists no lining for this model.

Which discipline? Training and lessons in all disciplines, showjumping, cross-country and hacking. In driving, gloves are compulsory, for the groom as well. For the dressage test, check your federation's colour rule first, as it says nothing about a two-tone glove.

When is another Roeckl model at Maddelin better? If you need a size larger than 8.5, or want a plain colour for the dressage arena, the ROECK-GRIP is the choice; it runs up to size 11 and comes in white. For winter, choose the ROECK-GRIP WINTER or the Weldon. If you are looking for a model with a silicone grip and reflective details, that is the Weldon.

Put the glove on before you pick up the rein and close the easy closure last. Roeckl lists the model as touchscreen compatible: you do not need to take the glove off to use your phone.

Every version of the Lona places a light or gold-coloured panel next to a dark one. Roeckl's washing guidance advises sorting by colour: so keep the pair separate from dark yard clothes.

Roeckl's brand-wide guidance, in short: if your pair has a hook-and-loop fastening, close it neatly first; do not turn the glove inside out, delicate cycle or 30 °C, no fabric softener, no tumble dryer. Drying flat at room temperature and putting them on now and then brings them back into shape. What applies to your pair is on the label inside the glove; machine washing goes with the label machine washable.

What sets the Lona apart from the classic ROECK-GRIP?

Not the material — that is ROECK-GRIP® on both zones — but the range and the design. The Lona belongs to the women's line, runs up to size 8.5 and is two-tone; the ROECK-GRIP runs up to 11 and is plain.

Which colour combinations does Maddelin carry in the Lona?

Black/white, black/gold, navy/white, navy/pink and brown/gold. Roeckl calls the last one mocha/gold.
