Between two sizes? We usually recommend the larger size, unless stated otherwise on the product. In our experience, Italian brands (such as Animo, Cavalleria Toscana and Vestrum) tend to come up small.

Rugs

How to measure your horse: using a soft tape measure, measure from the centre of the chest, over the point of the shoulder, horizontally along the body to the furthest point of the hindquarters. This is the total length.

Always check the brand's size chart. A rug size in cm (for example 125 or 145) is the back length for most brands, and how it converts to feet differs per brand. Some brands, such as Bucas, also measure differently. That's why every rug comes with the brand's own size information.

The table below converts the total length from feet to cm. This conversion is the same for every brand.

Product Information

The Kentucky Horsewear Riding Rug Heavy Fleece is an exercise rug in thick fleece that keeps your horse warm while you get on and warm up, and then helps to carry sweat away after work. It is made from the same Heavy Fleece fabric as the Kentucky Fleece Rug Heavy, which according to Kentucky has the look and feel of wool without the practical drawbacks wool can bring. Kentucky lists the rug for autumn, winter and spring. That makes it above all a rug for colder training days and the in-between seasons.

About this exercise rug

While you get on and walk your first round, the thick fleece keeps your horse at temperature. That counts on mornings when you start work with a cold horse.

After work, the breathable, quick-drying side of fleece comes into its own. The fabric lets sweat evaporate, so your horse dries off sooner after exertion. You therefore use the same rug both during the warm-up and while cooling down.

The classic shape is designed for use while riding. At the front you fasten the rug with a firm hook-and-loop closure in front of the saddle, so you do not have to tuck it underneath. A tail cord keeps it in place at the back.

In the stable, too, the choice of fabric is practical. Kentucky states that the fleece is shavings repellent: wood shavings and similar bedding cling to it less easily.

The finish stays recognisably Kentucky Horsewear, with a brown synthetic leather logo as a discreet accent. The Riding Rug Heavy Fleece comes in sizes M and L and in several colours, including Black, Grey, Navy, Bordeaux and Pine Green.

Choose this model when warmth during quiet work and good sweat management have to go together. If you are mainly looking for a very light exercise rug for milder conditions, a thinner model will serve you better.
