Who is it for? For a child whose hand circumference falls within size 4 or 5: in lessons, on the pony, when grooming and at competitions.

At the riding school and in lessons? There, the house rules of the club or riding school decide; competition rules do not apply. Grip on the rein and a glove that stays in place matter more there than the colour.

Pony and junior classes. The dressage requirement makes no distinction by age. Internationally, white, off-white or the colour of the jacket applies; Paardensport Vlaanderen specifies white, buff or the colour of the jacket, for pony and junior riders too. In the international showjumping classes for children and pony riders, gloves are not mentioned: not compulsory, but permitted. When is another Roeckl model a better fit? Once the hand has outgrown size 5, the adult ROECK-GRIP runs from size 6 to 11 with the same material construction. If your child rides outdoors in winter, a lined model is more suitable: Roeckl lists no lining for the JUNIOR. Rules differ by federation, discipline, level and country and change regularly: check the current rules of your own federation before you enter.

There are two sizes: 4 and 5. So the choice comes down to one step, and you settle that step by measuring, not by guessing.

Place a tape measure around the knuckles of the child's hand, leaving out the thumb, and have the child make a loose fist. Roeckl counts glove sizes in pouces (French inches) — about 2.7 cm per size — but explicitly links that calculation to the adult sizes and gives no circumference in centimetres for sizes 4 and 5. So compare with a glove that already fits well: if the measurement is close to the size your child wears now, stay with that size; if the hand is clearly above it, take the larger one.

Roeckl describes its sizes as a guide and writes that a riding glove should fit like a second skin, because holding the rein calls for a great deal of sensitivity. That applies to a child's hand just as much as to an adult's.

Not every colour comes in both sizes at Maddelin: black and navy are available in size 4 and 5, mocha in size 4 and white in size 5.

After a day of grooming or a lesson in the sand: knock out the dry sand and let the gloves dry before they go into the riding bag. Two points from it go against intuition: if the pair has a hook-and-loop fastening, close it neatly first, and do not turn the glove inside out. Otherwise a delicate cycle or 30 °C, no fabric softener and not in the tumble dryer.
