Between two sizes? We usually recommend the larger size, unless stated otherwise on the product. In our experience, Italian brands (such as Animo, Cavalleria Toscana and Vestrum) tend to come up small.

Rugs

How to measure your horse: using a soft tape measure, measure from the centre of the chest, over the point of the shoulder, horizontally along the body to the furthest point of the hindquarters. This is the total length.

Always check the brand's size chart. A rug size in cm (for example 125 or 145) is the back length for most brands, and how it converts to feet differs per brand. Some brands, such as Bucas, also measure differently. That's why every rug comes with the brand's own size information.

The table below converts the total length from feet to cm. This conversion is the same for every brand.

Product Information

The Horseware Rhino Plus Vari-Layer Turnout is a waterproof, breathable winter rug for horses that live out during the cold season. You choose between 250g and 450g fill, and a detachable neck cover is included as standard. Its main advantage is the Barrier Layer: if the strong outer fabric gets damaged, a separate waterproof layer underneath keeps your horse dry.

About this turnout rug

The Rhino Plus is built up in layers. On the outside is a 1000D polypropylene outer. Horseware calls polypropylene a very strong alternative to the polyester widely used for turnout rugs. Beneath it sits a separate waterproof, breathable barrier layer, then the thermobonded fiberfill and, on the inside, a polyester lining. The outer fabric protects the barrier layer. If the outside does get torn in the field, Horseware states that the layer underneath keeps your horse dry.

The fill follows the Vari-Layer principle. Horseware layers the fiberfill, with extra layers over the back and hips, the areas where a horse loses most heat according to Horseware. Because the fibre is also layered on the sides, the rug can sit closer to the body, trapping warm air and covering more of the belly. The aim is plenty of warmth without the bulk of a standard fill.

For fit, the Rhino Plus uses the V-Front Closure, Surefit Neck Design, dual leg arches, 3 crossed adjustable surcingles and a tail strap. According to Horseware this keeps the rug secure, even after your horse has been lying down or rolling. The silky-feel polyester lining is anti-static and shine-enhancing. You also get a tail flap with a wipe-clean tail cord, reflective strips, the Velcro Sandwich Closure and integrated liner loops.

Within the Horseware range at Maddelin, the Rhino Plus differs from the Horseware Rambo 1680D Plus Turnout Vari-Layer in its outer fabric: polypropylene with a barrier layer versus 1680D Ballistic Nylon. Both have a Vari-Layer fill and a detachable neck cover.

Choose the fill based on your horse and your field. The 250g is a medium-weight winter rug, the 450g a heavyweight. Whether your horse is clipped, how thick the coat is, how much shelter the field offers and how wet and windy it is will decide which weight fits. Regularly slide your hand under the rug at the withers and behind the shoulder: if it feels damp or warm, the rug is too heavy.

If it turns exceptionally cold, you can add a liner from the Horseware range via the liner loops. At the end of the season, store the rug clean and dry in a breathable bag.

The Rhino Plus Vari-Layer suits horses that spend a lot of time out in winter, or live out day and night, in a field where a rug has a lot to put up with. Clipped sport horses in dressage, show jumping or eventing that go out between training sessions benefit just as much as pleasure horses that live out all winter.

Put the rug on, fasten the V-Front Closure at the chest first, then the 3 crossed surcingles. Fasten the tail strap and attach the neck cover if you are using it. Machine wash at 30 °C. Line dry away from heat, do not bleach, tumble dry or iron. Store the rug in a breathable bag.

What does the Barrier Layer do?
Under the polypropylene outer sits a separate waterproof, breathable layer. If the outer fabric is damaged, Horseware states that this barrier layer keeps your horse dry.

What does Vari-Layer mean?
The fiberfill is layered, with extra layers over the back and hips. The rug sits closer to the body and covers more of the belly, without the bulk of a standard fill.

Should I choose 250g or 450g?
The 250g is a medium-weight and the 450g a heavyweight winter rug. The choice depends on coat, clipping, shelter and weather.

Is the neck cover included?
Yes. A detachable neck cover is included. Horseware does not state its fill weight.

Can I use a liner underneath?
