Between two sizes? We usually recommend the larger size, unless stated otherwise on the product. In our experience, Italian brands (such as Animo, Cavalleria Toscana and Vestrum) tend to come up small.

Rugs

How to measure your horse: using a soft tape measure, measure from the centre of the chest, over the point of the shoulder, horizontally along the body to the furthest point of the hindquarters. This is the total length.

Always check the brand's size chart. A rug size in cm (for example 125 or 145) is the back length for most brands, and how it converts to feet differs per brand. Some brands, such as Bucas, also measure differently. That's why every rug comes with the brand's own size information.

The table below converts the total length from feet to cm. This conversion is the same for every brand.

Product Information

The Horseware Rambo Optimo Turnout 0g is the outer-only rug from the Optimo line: a waterproof, breathable turnout rug with no fill, no neck cover and no liner. It is designed for bigger, broader-built horses that live out. The advantage: a generous cut with plenty of freedom of movement, as a waterproof base you can add to with an Optimo liner when needed.

About this turnout rug

Horseware's official name for this version is the Rambo Optimo Turnout Outer Only 0g. Outer Only means you get just the outer rug. It is intended to give your bigger-built horse total freedom of movement, and works as a lightweight, waterproof layer on wet, mild days or as the base of a system with liners.

The outer fabric is 1000D Ballistic Nylon, waterproof and breathable. The D stands for denier, a measure of yarn thickness: the higher it is, the heavier and stronger the fabric. The lining is 210D embossed polyester, anti-static and shine-enhancing. Horseware lists no fill for this rug: it is a 0g version.

What sets the Optimo apart is the Articulated Pivotal Dart: a dart above and behind the shoulder that follows your horse's natural movement, so the rug stays in place. The rug also has the Surefit Neck Design with V-Front Closure, dual leg arches, Safety Surcingles and straight surcingles, a tail flap, a wipe-clean PVC tail cord and reflective strips.

Within the Optimo range at Maddelin, this is the most basic version. The Horseware Rambo Optimo Plus Turnout 0g has the same base with a detachable hood; the Rambo Optimo Turnout Bundle supplies the outer rug with a neck cover and liner.

Horseware makes the Optimo Turnout roomier because it is intended for larger horses, and explicitly recommends sizing down. So measure your horse again and check against the size chart, even if you know the size of his current rug. Unsure between 125/175/5.9 and 140/190/6.3? Go by the measurement, not by the size of another rug.

With no fill and no neck cover, this is a rug for mild, wet days in spring and autumn. When it turns colder, add an Optimo liner. How much warmth your horse needs depends on breed, coat, clipping, wind and damp; check regularly with your hand under the rug at the withers.

Choose the Optimo Turnout 0g if your horse is bigger or broader-built and you are looking for a lightweight, waterproof turnout rug, or if you already have Optimo liners and only need an outer rug. It suits any horse turned out, whatever the discipline.

Want to protect the neck as well? Choose the Horseware Rambo Optimo Plus Turnout 0g with a detachable hood. Looking for outer rug, neck cover and liner in one set? Then the Rambo Optimo Turnout Bundle (0g Outer with 400g Liner) is the better choice.

Place the rug over the back and fasten the chest first with the V-Front Closure. Then do up the surcingles under the belly and position the tail cord under the tail. Check that the rug sits freely around the shoulder. Machine wash at 30°, line dry and do not use bleach, a tumble dryer or an iron. Horseware recommends professional cleaning.

Does the Rambo Optimo Turnout come up large?
Yes. Horseware builds it for larger horses and recommends choosing one size smaller than you would normally take.

How do I measure my horse?

Does it come with a neck cover or liner?
