Between two sizes? We usually recommend the larger size, unless stated otherwise on the product. In our experience, Italian brands (such as Animo, Cavalleria Toscana and Vestrum) tend to come up small.

Rugs

How to measure your horse: using a soft tape measure, measure from the centre of the chest, over the point of the shoulder, horizontally along the body to the furthest point of the hindquarters. This is the total length.

Always check the brand's size chart. A rug size in cm (for example 125 or 145) is the back length for most brands, and how it converts to feet differs per brand. Some brands, such as Bucas, also measure differently. That's why every rug comes with the brand's own size information.

The table below converts the total length from feet to cm. This conversion is the same for every brand.

Product Information

The Horseware Rambo 1680D Plus Turnout Vari-Layer is a waterproof, breathable winter rug with a 1680D Ballistic Nylon outer and a detachable neck cover. It is made for horses that spend a lot of time out in winter and need a rug that can take some knocks. You choose between 250g and 450g fill. The main advantage: a very strong outer fabric combined with a fill that gives warmth without much weight.

About this turnout rug

The outer fabric is 1680D Ballistic Nylon. The figure 1680D (denier) refers to the thickness of the yarn: the higher it is, the tougher the fabric. According to Horseware, this fabric is 120% stronger than their standard 1000D Ballistic Nylon. It is waterproof and breathable, so rain stays out and moisture from your horse can escape. Inside is a 210D embossed polyester lining, anti-static and shine-enhancing.

The thermobonded fiberfill follows the Vari-Layer principle. Horseware layers the fibre, with extra insulation over the back and hips, where a horse loses most heat according to Horseware. Because the fibre is also layered on the sides, the rug sits closer to the body, trapping warm air and covering more of the belly. The aim: plenty of warmth with as little weight as possible.

The contoured detachable neck cover is included as standard. Fit comes from the Surefit Neck Design, the V-Front Closure and dual leg arches. 3 crossed detachable surcingles with the Rambo Safety Surcingle System keep the rug in place. The rug also has a tail flap, a wipe-clean tail cord, reflective strips, the Velcro Sandwich Closure and integrated liner loops for a Horseware liner.

Within the Horseware range at Maddelin, this rug differs from the Horseware Rhino Plus Vari-Layer Turnout in its outer fabric: 1680D Ballistic Nylon versus polypropylene with a separate barrier layer. The extended warranty is 10 years on this Rambo and 3 years on the Rhino Plus.

Choose the fill based on your horse and the conditions. The 250g is a medium-weight winter rug, the 450g a heavyweight. Whether your horse is clipped, how thick the coat is, how much shelter the field offers and how wet and windy it is will decide which weight fits. Regularly slide your hand under the rug at the withers and behind the shoulder: if it feels damp or warm, the rug is too heavy.

If you need more in a harsh winter, you can add a liner from the Horseware range via the liner loops. Let a wet rug dry before putting it away.

This Rambo Vari-Layer is meant for horses that spend a lot of time out in winter, or live out day and night, and for horses that are hard on their rugs in the field. It suits clipped sport horses in dressage, show jumping or eventing that go out between training sessions, as well as pleasure horses that spend the winter in the field.

Put the rug on, fasten the V-Front Closure at the chest first, then the 3 crossed surcingles. Attach the tail cord and, if you are using it, the neck cover. Machine wash at 30 °C with the Velcro closed and straps fastened. Line dry only, do not bleach, tumble dry or iron. Horseware recommends professional cleaning.
