Product Information

The Horseware Rambo 1680D Plus Turnout with Vari-Layer is the heaviest turnout in the Rambo range. The outer fabric of 1680D ballistic nylon is the strongest material Horseware uses in blankets — developed for horses that are hard on their blankets, are in herds, or simply need a blanket that will last for years.

The Vari-Layer filling is not evenly distributed: the bulk is concentrated over the back and loins, where your horse loses heat, and remains thinner over the shoulders, where it needs to move. A detachable neck piece is included as standard and attaches with the Velcro sandwich system, without loose hooks or clips.

Furthermore: V-Front closure for less shoulder pressure, three cross surcingles with safety closure, double leg arches, reflective strips, tail flap and a washable PVC tail cord. Liner loops allow for additional layers when it gets really cold.

Rider's tip: this is an investment, not an impulse buy. For a horse that lives outdoors every winter and needs to wear the same blanket for three or four seasons, the 1680D ballistic nylon pays for itself. For a horse that is mainly stabled and only comes out during the day, a 1200D version is usually sufficient.

The 250gis the most common choice for a Belgian winter. The 450gis intended for freezing weather, for horses that are fully clipped, and for horses that stay outside day and night.

The safety surcingles are designed to detach under excessive pressure. This is particularly relevant when your horse is kept in a herd. Check them with each use: they should close securely, but not be stuck.

The neck piece does not need to remain permanently on the rug. You can remove it on dry, cold days; reattach it during prolonged rain.

For whom? For riders looking for a winter rug that will last multiple seasons, even for horses that are hard on their rugs or are kept in groups.

When to use?During the coldest months, for horses kept outdoors that need protection from rain, wind, and frost.

For which horses?Suitable for horses from 5'6" to 7'3". Particularly useful for clipped competition horses that are turned out in winter.

When is an alternative better? If your horse is only turned out for a few hours during the day, a 1200D version like the Amigo 1200D Plus Turnout is usually sufficient and considerably lighter in price.

Place the rug centrally over the horse's back and fasten the V-Front breast closure first. Then attach the three cross surcingles and the tail cord, and check that you can slide a flat hand between the surcingle and the belly. Attach the neckpiece to the front using the velcro sandwich system. Compatible liners can be added using the liner loops.

Is the neck piece included?

Yes. A detachable neck piece is standard with the Plus version.

What is the difference with the regular Rambo 1680D Turnout?

The Plus version includes the neck piece. Both models share the same 1680D ballistic nylon outer fabric.

What does Vari-Layer mean?

The filling is unevenly distributed: thicker over the back and loins, thinner over the shoulders. This keeps the warmth where it's needed and allows your horse freedom of movement.

Why safety surcingles?

They are designed to release under excessive pressure, for example, if a horse gets caught on something in the field. This reduces the risk of injury.

Do I choose 250g or 450g?

250g is sufficient for most winters here. Choose 450g for persistent frost, for fully clipped horses, or for horses that live permanently outdoors.
