Between two sizes? We usually recommend the larger size, unless stated otherwise on the product. In our experience, Italian brands (such as Animo, Cavalleria Toscana and Vestrum) tend to come up small.

Rugs

How to measure your horse: using a soft tape measure, measure from the centre of the chest, over the point of the shoulder, horizontally along the body to the furthest point of the hindquarters. This is the total length.

Always check the brand's size chart. A rug size in cm (for example 125 or 145) is the back length for most brands, and how it converts to feet differs per brand. Some brands, such as Bucas, also measure differently. That's why every rug comes with the brand's own size information.

The table below converts the total length from feet to cm. This conversion is the same for every brand.

Product Information

The Horseware Newmarket Cosy Stable is a stable rug with a classic Witney check — the design seen on British racecourses for generations. Horseware has retained the look and modernised the construction: the outer fabric is 1000D ripstop polyester and the rug is breathable, allowing moisture to wick away from the coat.

About this stable rug

The V-Front closure frees the shoulders and relieves pressure on the chest — important for a rug that stays on in the stable for hours on end. Two cross surcingles keep everything in place without pinching, and the tail flap with tail cord prevents the rug from slipping forward when your horse lies down.

Please note: this is a stable rug, not a turnout. It is not waterproof and should not be used in the field.

Rider's tip: the 200g is the usual choice for an enclosed stable with other horses in it. Choose the 400g for a draughty or open stable, for a clipped horse, or for an older resident who struggles to stay warm.

Before going to bed, feel behind the withers. Warm and dry is good. Damp means the blanket is too warm.

This blanket is not suitable for turnout. It is breathable but not waterproof; wet insulation loses its effectiveness and dries slowly.

For whom?
For riders looking for a warm stable blanket with a classic look instead of a technical-looking winter blanket.

When to use?
At night and during the day in the stable during the colder months.

For which horses?
Especially for clipped horses, older horses, and horses in a cold or drafty stable.

When is an alternative better?
If your horse also goes outside with this blanket, you need a turnout. If you are looking for a blanket that wicks away moisture after work, then a cooler is the right choice.

Centre the rug on the horse's back and fasten the V-Front chest closure first. Then attach the two cross surcingles: crossed under the belly, with about a hand's width of slack. Finally, clip the tail cord. Check that the rug does not pull back at the shoulders.

Horseware

Horseware Ireland was founded in 1985 by Tom and Carol MacGuinness in Dundalk, Ireland. Their aim was simple: a rug that keeps the horse dry, stops it from overheating and stays in place. That led to the Rambo Original, the design that made the brand's name, and the Rambo range is still made in Dundalk today.

Can this blanket be worn outside?

No. This is a stable blanket without a waterproof layer. For the pasture, you need a turnout blanket.

What is the Witney check?

The classic checked design that takes its name from the English town of Witney, traditionally known for its wool blankets. Horseware brings that look back in a modern, breathable construction.

Should I choose 200g or 400g?

200g for a closed stable with multiple horses. 400g for a drafty stable, a clipped horse, or an older boarder.

What size do I need?

Measure from the center of the chest, along the flank, to the tailbone. If you are unsure between two sizes, choose the larger one.
