Product Information

The LJ Leathers Sarra Bridle is a bridle in rolled and stitched cowhide leather, with an anatomically shaped headpiece, a curved browband and a wide combined noseband. It is intended for riders looking for a fine, classic line with soft padding at the contact points. Web reins with stops are included.

About this bridle

What typifies the Sarra is the rolled and stitched finish. With rolled leather the strap is rolled up and stitched closed into a round cord instead of a flat band. That makes the lines of the bridle narrower and finer, which visually gives your horse's head a more elegant look. It takes more work to make than flat straps, and you can see that in the finish.

The headpiece is anatomically shaped. It is made wider than a classic narrow band, so the weight of the bridle is carried across a larger part of the neck and the leather does not lie in a thin strip behind the ears.

The browband is curved. That is more than an aesthetic choice: a curved browband leaves room around the base of the ears, where a straight browband can push against them on some horses. The finish is kept refined, without conspicuous decoration.

The noseband is a combined noseband: made wide, softly padded and with a flash strap underneath. The width spreads the tension across a larger part of the nose, and the flash strap runs below the bit so the bit sits quieter in the mouth. The soft padding prevents the edge of the leather from coming directly onto the head.

The material is good quality cowhide leather, supple and strong. It is suitable for daily use and equally so for competitions. The leather breaks in and shapes itself over time to your horse's head, which you notice most on the noseband after a number of weeks.

The buckles are stainless steel and therefore do not tarnish. The bridle comes with web reins with stops: woven reins whose stops give your hand a grip and prevent the rein from slipping through when it is wet. So you can ride with it straight away.

This bridle is available in black, in size Full.

Key benefits

  • Rolled and stitched finish gives a fine, slim line on the head
  • Anatomical headpiece that carries the weight across a wider surface
  • Curved browband that leaves room around the base of the ears
  • Wide combined noseband that spreads the tension and stabilises the bit
  • Soft padding at the contact points
  • Supple cowhide leather that breaks in and shapes itself to the head
  • Stainless steel buckles that do not tarnish
  • Web reins with stops are included

Practical advice

Adjust the headpiece with a finger's width of play behind the ears and check that the curved browband really sits clear of the base of the ears. Keep two fingers of room under the noseband; because this noseband is wide, it is also worth checking that it stays well below the cheekbone.

Adjust the flash strap only after the noseband is in place, and loosely: it should stabilise the bit, not pull the mouth shut.

Rolled leather asks for a little more attention than flat straps. Dirt and sweat creep into the seam and into the rounding, so wipe the bridle down after riding with a damp cloth and work along the seam with a soft brush or cloth. Clean it regularly with leather soap and then treat it with leather grease or leather balm so it stays supple. Work in thin layers and pay particular attention to the folds at the buckles. After a wet ride, let the web reins dry in the open air, not near the heating.

When to choose this bridle

This bridle suits riders looking for a classic, refined appearance who appreciate the fine line of rolled leather, without giving up fit and padding. It is usable in dressage and in daily training, and it is delivered complete with reins.

If you want an outspoken, sparkling look, the Superior Kristal with its crystal browband is the more logical choice within our range. If you ride without a flash strap, look for a model with a plain or a grackle noseband. And anyone who prefers flat straps, because they are easier to keep clean, is better off with a bridle in classic flat leather. Do also mind the size: this bridle is available here in Full only.
