Product Information

The HFI Merano bridle is an anatomical leather bridle with a wide, padded headpiece, an anatomically shaped browband and noseband, and an adjustable chin pad. The combined noseband can be converted into a French noseband. It is supplied with 5/8 rubber reins. For riders who deliberately choose a softly padded bridle.

About this bridle

The Merano is built around fit and pressure distribution. The headpiece is noticeably wide and both padded and lined with supple leather. That width spreads the contact over a larger surface than a narrow, traditional headpiece, and the soft lining makes the transition to the head flatter where the bridle touches.

What sets the Merano apart from many anatomical bridles is that the approach does not stop at the headpiece. The browband and the noseband are anatomically shaped and lined with supple leather too. The anatomical finish therefore returns in several places, which is interesting when you are more deliberate about fit than with a simply built bridle.

The noseband is a combined noseband with an adjustable chin pad. Thanks to that adjustability you can position the chin pad precisely instead of having to accept wherever it happens to fall. On top of that the combined noseband can be converted into a French noseband: take the flash strap off and you are left with a classic noseband. So you have two versions within the same bridle, which is handy if your horse asks for something different at one stage of its training than at another.

The look stays classic and understated. Cream stitching sets a subtle contrast against the leather and the square stainless steel buckles finish the whole thing off neatly. Stainless steel does not rust from sweat or rain, which counts in daily use.

The bridle comes with 5/8 rubber reins in supple rubber. Rubber reins give grip when it rains or when your hands sweat, and the width of 5/8 inch sits between the narrow and the wide versions. So you have a matching set straight away and do not need to choose anything separately.

This bridle comes in size Full. If in doubt, compare the strap lengths with your current bridle rather than going by the type of horse.

First adjust the headpiece so the wide section falls neatly behind the ears and presses nowhere on the base of the ears. Then set the cheekpieces, until the bit sits quietly in the corners of the mouth. Leave two fingers of room under the noseband and a flat hand under the throatlash. You fasten the flash strap looser than the noseband.

If you want the French version, take the flash strap off and check the position of the noseband again; without a flash strap it often sits slightly differently. If you work with a bit that takes up a lot of room at the corners of the mouth, check whether the chin pad still lies flat.

For maintenance a fixed routine is enough: wipe down after every ride, leather soap every few weeks and then leather balm. Let the leather dry at room temperature and store the bridle on a wide hook. Rinse the rubber reins with lukewarm water; rubber does not tolerate leather balm.

The Merano is a logical choice when you are specifically looking for an anatomical bridle with a convertible noseband and an adjustable chin pad, and when you want a set of reins included straight away. It is usable for training and competition.

If your horse needs a size other than Full, you are better off looking at another model from our range. If you are expressly after a drop or grackle noseband, the Merano does not offer that. And if you prefer to ride with leather reins, bear in mind that rubber reins come with this bridle.

Place the wide headpiece behind the ears, then adjust the cheekpieces until the bit rests quietly in the corners of the mouth. Leave two fingers under the noseband and a flat hand under the throatlash; fasten the flash strap looser. Removing the flash strap for the French version? Check the position of the noseband again.

Wipe the leather after every ride, use leather soap every few weeks followed by leather balm and let it dry at room temperature. Rinse the supplied 5/8 rubber reins with lukewarm water, without leather balm.
