Description
The Heiniger 31F/23 blade set is a screw-on blade set with a cutting height of 1-2 mm. The fine 31F bottom blade sets that length, while the 23 top blade moves across it. The set screws onto a Heiniger Xperience, Xplorer or Progress. For riders and grooms who want to clip a fine coat short and evenly, right through to the finishing work.
About this blade
Screw-on blades come in two separate parts: a fixed bottom blade and a moving top blade, which you fasten to the clipper head with screws. The bottom blade sits against the coat like a comb and holds the hair at length; the top blade cuts across it. You set the blade pressure yourself, so you can feel when the pair is running too tight or too loose.
You read the cutting height from the first number, because that is the bottom blade. Here that is the 31F. The F is marked on that bottom blade and means fine: it halves the cutting height. A standard 31/23 clips at 2-4 mm, this 31F/23 at 1-2 mm.
The second number, the 23, is the moving top blade. It does not determine the cutting length. In practice: the 31F/23 and the 31F/15 both give 1-2 mm. If you run two sets alongside each other, you are not changing length but changing blade.
Mind the difference between the Heiniger systems. The Xperience, the Xplorer and the Progress work with screw-on blades like this one. The Saphir, the Opal and the Onyx work with snap-on blade sets, which you swap in a single movement without tools. Screw-on blades and snap-on blade sets are not interchangeable.
Key benefits
- Cutting height of 1-2 mm for a short, even clip
- The fine 31F bottom blade finishes more neatly than a standard 2-4 mm bottom blade
- Bottom and top blade are supplied as a pair and can be fitted straight away
- Adjustable blade pressure, so you can set the pair to your own hand
- Suitable for the Heiniger Xperience, Xplorer and Progress
- Blunt blades can be resharpened rather than replaced
When to choose this product
This set is meant for horses with a fine or clean coat, when you want to clip short with a tight finish. Think of a full winter clip where you mark out neat lines, or of touching up a horse that is already clipped short. If your clipper works with screw-on blades, this is one of the shortest standard sets you can fit to it.
If you want to leave more hair, choose the 31/15 or the 31/23 at 2-4 mm. For dirty or rough cattle coats the 21/23 is the one made for the job, and for styling work the 35/17 or the fine 35F/17. If it really has to be as short as possible, the 53/23 at 1.0 mm is the shortest in the range. If you have a Saphir or an Opal, you need snap-on blade sets and not screw-on blades.
Fit
The 31F/23 fits the Heiniger Xperience, Xplorer and Progress, which work with screw-on blades. It does not fit the Saphir, the Opal or the Onyx: those use snap-on blade sets.
The 31F bottom blade determines the cutting height of 1-2 mm; the F stands for fine. The top blade 23 does not change the cutting length, so the 31F/15 and the 31F/23 clip equally short.

Expert advice
A blade lives on oil. Put a thin film on the teeth before you start clipping and repeat every few minutes. That keeps the pair cool and the clipper running lighter; blades that run dry get hot and pull at the coat. Afterwards, brush the hair out from between the blades, oil again and store the set dry. Heiniger clipper oil is part of our care range.
If stripes are left standing, or if you have to push to get through the coat, the blades are due for sharpening. Do not tighten the blade pressure further, because that only speeds up wear. We sharpen blades of every brand and for every clipper; hand them in properly cleaned and allow one to two weeks.
Use & care
Screw the set onto the clipper and set the blade tension. Put a thin film of oil on the teeth before the clip and repeat every few minutes; if the blades feel warm, you have waited too long.
Afterwards, brush the hair away, oil again and store the set dry. If lines remain or you have to push, do not tighten further but have the blades sharpened; hand them in properly cleaned.
Frequently asked questions
Does this fit my clipper?
The 31F/23 fits the Heiniger Xperience, the Xplorer and the Progress. It does not fit the Saphir, the Opal or the Onyx: those clippers work with snap-on blade sets. If you cannot find your clipper in this list, get in touch with us before you order.
What is the difference with the 31F/15?
Only the moving top blade differs. The bottom blade is the 31F on both, so both sets clip at 1-2 mm. The second number does not change the cutting length.
Why does this set clip shorter than the 31/23?
Because of the F on the bottom blade. On screw-on blades it halves the cutting height: 2-4 mm becomes 1-2 mm.
Which coat is 1-2 mm suitable for?
For a fine or clean coat that you want to clip short and evenly. On a thick winter coat or a horse that lives out a lot, you leave more hair with 2-4 mm.
How often should I oil?
Before every clip and then every few minutes. If the blades feel warm, you have waited too long.
Can I have these blades sharpened?
Yes. We sharpen every brand and every clipper. Hand the blades in properly cleaned, in the shop or by post; the turnaround is one to two weeks.
Can I use this set on cattle as well?
The 31F sets are meant for horses with a fine coat. For cattle with a dirty coat the 21/23 is the right choice, and for styling work on horses and cattle the 35/17.
