Oil is no side issue when you clip. Put the machine down every five to ten minutes, brush the hair out from between the blades and put a few drops of R15 oil on the teeth and on the side of the top blade. A blade running dry gets hot, and a hot blade pulls hair instead of cutting it. After every clip, blow out the housing and check the air filter.

Have your blades sharpened as soon as you have to push harder or as soon as lines stay behind in the coat. That moment comes sooner than most riders expect, certainly on a sandy or muddy coat. If you clip right through a winter, it is worth keeping two sets to hand: an A2F/AC for short, tight work and a CA2/AC with 18 teeth for a dirty coat. Choose the Fusion if you clip more than a few horses a season, or if you work with animals carrying a thick, dirty coat. For yards, grooms and professional users getting through several horses in a day, this is the model with the most in reserve. The two speeds and the active cooling make the difference as soon as you are at it for more than half an hour at a stretch.

If you clip one or two horses a winter, the Lister Star is a lighter and simpler machine: 45 watts, 750 grams, also mains-powered. If you want to work without a cable, for instance in the barn aisle or with a horse that takes fright at a cord along its legs, look at the Lister Eclipse. For fine finishing of the head, ears and legs, a compact machine such as the Heiniger Saphir Basic is handier than the Fusion.

Choose 2500 rpm for a normal coat and 2900 rpm for a thick, dirty or matted coat in which the blade starts to drag. You set the blade tension with the tensioning system with its sealed nut. Every five to ten minutes, brush the hair out from between the blades and apply a few drops of R15 oil to the teeth and the side of the top blade.

After every clip, blow out the housing and check the replaceable air filter. Always keep the cable safely out of the horse's way.

Which blades or blade sets fit this machine?
The Fusion runs Lister A series screw-on blades: A2SS/AC Super Surgical (0.5 mm), A2S/AC Surgical (1.0 mm), A2C/AC Close (1.2 mm), A2F/AC Fine (1.4 mm), A2/AC Medium (2.5 mm), CA2/AC Coarse (2.5 mm with 18 teeth) and Covercote (5.0 mm with 24 teeth). What is the difference between the two speeds?
2500 rpm is enough for an ordinary coat and runs a little more quietly. You switch to 2900 rpm when the coat is thick, dirty or matted and the blade would otherwise start to drag.

Can I clip a whole horse with the Fusion?
Yes. The Fusion is intended for full clips and for several animals in a row.

What is in the case?
The machine, an A2F/AC blade set, R15 oil, R2 grease, a screwdriver set and a brush, together in a carrying case.

How often should I apply oil while clipping?
Every five to ten minutes. Brush the hair away first, then apply a few drops to the teeth and to the side of the top blade.

Is the Fusion suitable for animals other than horses?
Yes, it is also used for cattle and alpacas. For a dirty or muddy cattle coat, choose a blade with fewer, more widely spaced teeth.

What is the difference with the Lister Eclipse?
The Fusion is mains-powered and delivers more power (360 watts against 29 watts) with two speeds. The Eclipse is cordless, weighs 844 grams and runs for up to 130 minutes on a battery. Both use the same A series blades.

How do I know my blades are blunt?
You notice it in the work: you have to push harder, the machine moves more slowly through the coat and lines stay behind. That is the moment to have the blades sharpened.
