You should still be able to slide two fingers under the noseband. Set the flash strap noticeably looser: it sits under the bit and is there to keep it still, not to hold the mouth shut. If you are riding a young horse, feel free to start without the flash strap and only add it once you notice your horse benefits from it.

Vegetable-tanned leather needs a breaking-in period. Grease it thoroughly once when you first use it, then keep a fixed routine: wipe down after the ride, clean weekly with saddle soap and grease lightly. Store the bridle on a wide hook so the headpiece does not hang in a sharp fold.
