Stop clipping every few minutes to brush the blade set clean and oil it with the oil supplied. Oil keeps the blade set cool and lets the blades run smoothly over each other. A dry blade set gets hot, pulls at the hair and goes blunt sooner. Feel the blade set with your hand now and then: if it becomes too hot to hold comfortably, put the machine down for a moment.

Brush or groom your horse before you start. Sand, mud and dried sweat in the coat wear the cutting edges down far faster than hair alone. Keep the machine, the batteries and the blade sets in the case in a dry place. Groom your horse before you start. Each battery gives about 120 minutes; while you work, the second one charges in about 60 minutes in the charging station. Stop every few minutes to brush out the blade set and oil it with the supplied oil. If the blade set gets too hot to hold comfortably, take a short break.

Which blades or blade sets fit this clipper?
The Saphir works with Heiniger snap-on blade sets, which are interchangeable with those of the Heiniger Opal. Common sizes are 10 at 1.5 mm, 15 at 1.2 mm, 30 at 0.5 mm, 40 at 0.25 mm, 7 at 3.2 mm and 5 at 6.3 mm. Blade sets with a W in the name are wider, for example 10W at 2.3 mm and 15W at 1.0 mm. If you cannot find your blade set, get in touch before you order.

Can I clip a whole horse with it?
Yes, that is what this machine is made for. The combination of a strong motor and a wide blade set is intended for large areas, but you can do detail work with it too.

How long can I clip without interruption?
About 120 minutes per battery. Because two batteries are supplied, you can clip for up to about four hours and charge the empty battery while you carry on working.

Why does a quiet machine matter?
Many horses react more strongly to the noise and vibration of a clipper than to the clipping itself. A quieter machine with less vibration gives them less reason to tense up, which helps above all with young horses or with animals that still have to get used to it.

Why a wide blade set?
A wider cutting swathe covers more area per pass. On a horse's body that means fewer passes, so you are finished sooner and there is less chance of visible lines where two passes overlap.
