Description
The Bucas Irish Turnout 50 is a waterproof, breathable turnout rug with a light 50 g fill. It is made for horses living out in spring and autumn: dry in rain and wind, without the warmth of a winter rug. The 1200 denier Ripstop outer and the magnetic Snap-lock front closure make it a sturdy rug that goes on and off quickly, day after day.
About this turnout rug
The in-between months are the hardest to rug for. A rain sheet with no fill often feels too thin on a wet, windy day, while a winter rug is simply too warm. The Irish Turnout 50 sits between the two: a thin 50 g layer of thermobonded polyester under a waterproof shell. It suits any horse that lives out, whatever the discipline: dressage, showjumping, eventing or leisure riding.
The outer fabric is 1200 denier Ripstop. Ripstop is a weave pattern that makes tears less likely to start and stops a small snag from running further, which matters in a field with fencing, hedges or playful companions. The fabric is waterproof to a hydrostatic head of more than 5000 mm and breathable to more than 3000 g/24h/m². Rain stays out while the moisture your horse gives off can escape.
Inside is the Bucas Dermo-care lining: silky smooth, with wicking properties. It helps the coat dry after washing or work and keeps the hair flat and soft.
The fit is the Classic Cut with shoulder darts, which give more room and a better fit around the chest and shoulder. At the front there is a T-bar with a magnetic Snap-lock, which keeps the rug correctly in place and replaces hook and loop on the chest. The rug also has cross surcingles, a tail flap with tail loop, a Deluxe fillet string that stops the rug blowing up over the back, and attachment points for leg straps.
Within the Bucas range at Maddelin, the Irish Turnout sits above the Freedom Turnout, the entry model in 600 denier with a slimmer cut, no shoulder darts and a hook and loop front. What makes the Irish more flexible: it has attachment points for a neck cover and connection points for Bucas Liners, Quilts & Coolers, so one rug can grow with the season.

When to choose this product
The Irish Turnout 50 suits horses with a normal coat living out in spring and autumn, and owners who prefer to work with one rug plus an extra layer rather than a whole stack of rugs.
If your horse needs more insulation, look at the Bucas Irish Turnout 100 or the Irish Turnout 300. If you want the neck covered from the start, there is the Bucas Irish Turnout 50 + Neck. For an even heavier outer fabric and leg straps included, the alternative is the Bucas Atlantic Turnout 50 in 1680 denier ballistic nylon. For a narrow-built horse, the Bucas Freedom Turnout 50 may fit more closely.
Fit
Measure your horse the Bucas way: from the centre of the chest, over the highest point of the shoulder, to the back of the hind leg. Choose the nearest size. A rug that is too big slips sideways, presses on the withers and can cause rubs.
The Irish Turnout 50 has a Classic Cut with shoulder darts for more room at the shoulder. Maddelin stocks 145/195/6.6 and 155/205/6.9; other sizes can be ordered on request.

Expert advice
Measure your horse the Bucas way: from the centre of the chest, over the highest point of the shoulder, to the back of the hind leg. Choose the nearest size. Do not size up: a rug that is too big slips sideways, presses on the withers and can cause rubs.
When it turns colder you can attach a Bucas Liner, Quilt or Cooler under the Irish Turnout 50 instead of switching rugs straight away. Every Bucas rug carries a Rug Selector label showing the recommended temperature range. Breed, whether the horse is clipped, humidity and wind all play a part.
Be realistic about waterproofing. Bucas itself points out that water can get in along edges and seams, and that in heavy rain water may run down the neck under the rug. The water-repellent finish on the outer also wears off through weather, use and washing. Wash at no more than 30 degrees with Bucas Rug Wash and restore the finish afterwards with Bucas Rug Conditioner.
Use & care
Put the rug on and fasten the T-bar with magnetic Snap-lock at the chest first. Then do up the cross surcingles. If you use leg straps, fix them to the attachment points provided. The Deluxe fillet string runs under the tail. Check that the rug sits straight and the shoulders stay free.
Wash at 30 degrees maximum with Bucas Rug Wash, without fabric softener, and do not tumble dry. Afterwards apply Bucas Rug Conditioner to the clean outer side.
Frequently asked questions
How do I measure my horse for a Bucas rug?
Measure from the centre of the chest, over the highest point of the shoulder, to the back of the hind leg, then pick the nearest size. Bucas size 145 is listed with us as 145/195/6.6, size 155 as 155/205/6.9.
What weather is a 50 g fill meant for?
The in-between seasons: wet, windy weather when a rug with no fill is too light and a winter rug too warm. The exact range is on the Rug Selector label Bucas attaches to the rug. Breed, coat, humidity and wind all matter.
How does it differ from the Irish Turnout 100?
Only in the fill: 50 g versus 100 g of thermobonded polyester. Outer fabric, lining, cut and fastenings are the same. The 100 g version gives one step more insulation.
Can I attach a neck cover or an under rug?
Yes. The rug has attachment points for the Irish Turnout Neck and connection points for Bucas Liners, Quilts & Coolers. The separate neck is not part of our standard range, but we can order it on request.
How do I wash this turnout rug?
By hand or in the machine at 30 degrees maximum, on a gentle cycle, with Bucas Rug Wash. Household detergent can damage the waterproof coating. No fabric softener, no spin drying, no tumble drying and no dry cleaning. Dry flat or hanging at room temperature, then treat the clean outer side with Bucas Rug Conditioner.
Are other sizes available?
We stock 145/195/6.6 and 155/205/6.9. Other sizes can be ordered for you on request.
My horse is broad in the chest. Is there a solution?
Bucas makes a Chest Extender for the magnetic T-bar (model 802, for rugs from 2017 onwards). It can be ordered on request.
