This set suits horses that spend a lot of time out in spring and autumn, clipped or partly clipped horses whose neck you want covered, and riders who like to bring a clean horse in from the field.

If your horse does not need a neck, the Bucas Irish Turnout 50 is enough. If you are after a rug with neck for winter, there is the Bucas Irish Turnout 300 + Neck Set, with 300 g in the rug and 100 g in the neck. In between sits the Bucas Freedom Turnout + Neck 100, the entry model in 600 denier with a slimmer cut and no shoulder darts.

Measure your horse the Bucas way: from the centre of the chest, over the highest point of the shoulder, to the back of the hind leg. Choose the nearest size. A rug that is too big slips sideways, presses on the withers and can cause rubs.

The Irish Turnout 50 + Neck has a Classic Cut with shoulder darts for more room at the shoulder. The neck cover should lie flat and let your horse graze freely. Maddelin stocks 145/195/6.6 and 155/205/6.9; other sizes can be ordered on request.

Size it as you would any Bucas rug: measure from the centre of the chest, over the highest point of the shoulder, to the back of the hind leg, and choose the nearest size. A rug that is too big slips sideways, presses on the withers and can cause rubs. When trying it on, also check that the neck cover lies flat and your horse can graze freely.

For timing, look at the Rug Selector label Bucas attaches to the rug: it shows the recommended temperature range. Breed, clipping, wind and humidity all play a part. When it gets colder, a Bucas Liner or Quilt can go underneath.

A neck cover protects the neck, but it does not turn a rug into a sealed suit. Bucas itself states that water can get in along edges and seams, and that in heavy rain water may run down the neck under a rug. Wash rug and neck at 30 degrees maximum with Bucas Rug Wash and restore the water-repellent finish, which wears off with weather and washing, using Bucas Rug Conditioner.

Put the rug on with its neck cover and fasten the T-bar with magnetic Snap-lock at the chest first. Then do up the cross surcingles. If you use leg straps, fix them to the attachment points provided. The Deluxe fillet string runs under the tail. Check that the rug sits straight, the shoulders stay free and the neck cover lies flat.

Wash at 30 degrees maximum with Bucas Rug Wash, without fabric softener, and do not tumble dry. Afterwards apply Bucas Rug Conditioner to the clean outer side.

Is the neck cover included, and can I take it off?
The matching neck cover is supplied. Bucas does not specify for this model whether it is detachable. If that is decisive for you, ask us and we will check on the rug itself.

Can a liner go under this rug?
Yes. The Irish Turnout has connection points for Bucas Liners, Quilts & Coolers, so you can fasten an extra layer underneath.

Which size should I take?
Measure from the centre of the chest, over the highest point of the shoulder, to the back of the hind leg and choose the nearest size. Bucas size 145 is 145/195/6.6 with us, size 155 is 155/205/6.9.

Are there other sizes?
We stock 145/195/6.6 and 155/205/6.9. Other sizes can be ordered on request.

When do I use a 50 g rug with neck?
In spring and autumn, in wet and windy weather, when a winter rug is still too warm. The recommended temperature range is on the Bucas Rug Selector label attached to the rug.

How does it differ from the Irish Turnout 300 + Neck Set?
In the fill. This rug has 50 g; the 300 + Neck Set has 300 g in the rug and 100 g in the neck and is meant for winter. Outer fabric, lining and fastenings are the same.

How do I wash the rug and neck cover?
By hand or machine at 30 degrees maximum, gentle cycle, with Bucas Rug Wash only. No fabric softener, spinning, tumble drying or dry cleaning. Dry flat or hanging, then treat the clean outer side with Bucas Rug Conditioner.
