The Bucas Irish Turnout 50 + Neck is a lightweight turnout rug with neck: a 50 g fill, waterproof and breathable, supplied with a matching neck cover. It is meant for horses living out in spring and autumn whose neck you also want to protect from rain, wind and mud. The basis is the same as the standard Irish Turnout: 1200 denier Ripstop, Dermo-care lining and magnetic Snap-lock.

About this turnout rug

A rug keeps the body dry, but the neck stays bare. On a rainy autumn day that means a wet, muddy horse from ears to withers, and a lot of grooming before you can tack up. With the Irish Turnout 50 + Neck the protection carries on over the neck. The rug suits any horse that lives out, whatever your discipline: dressage, showjumping, eventing or leisure.

The 50 g fill of thermobonded polyester is deliberately light. The aim is to stay dry and out of the wind, not winter insulation. Bucas does not specify the fill of the neck cover for this model, so we do not state it either.

The outer fabric is 1200 denier Ripstop, a weave that makes tears less likely to start and stops them spreading. It is waterproof to a hydrostatic head of more than 5000 mm, with breathability of more than 3000 g/24h/m². The Dermo-care lining is silky smooth and wicking: it helps the coat dry after washing or work and keeps the hair flat and soft.

The fit is the Classic Cut with shoulder darts, which give more room around the chest and shoulder. The chest fastens with a T-bar and magnetic Snap-lock, which keeps the rug correctly in place and replaces hook and loop. Cross surcingles, a tail flap with tail loop, a Deluxe fillet string to stop the rug blowing up, and attachment points for leg straps complete the specification.

Practical advice

Size it as you would any Bucas rug: measure from the centre of the chest, over the highest point of the shoulder, to the back of the hind leg, and choose the nearest size. A rug that is too big slips sideways, presses on the withers and can cause rubs. When trying it on, also check that the neck cover lies flat and your horse can graze freely.

For timing, look at the Rug Selector label Bucas attaches to the rug: it shows the recommended temperature range. Breed, clipping, wind and humidity all play a part. When it gets colder, a Bucas Liner or Quilt can go underneath.

A neck cover protects the neck, but it does not turn a rug into a sealed suit. Bucas itself states that water can get in along edges and seams, and that in heavy rain water may run down the neck under a rug. Wash rug and neck at 30 degrees maximum with Bucas Rug Wash and restore the water-repellent finish, which wears off with weather and washing, using Bucas Rug Conditioner.

When to choose this turnout rug

This set suits horses that spend a lot of time out in spring and autumn, clipped or partly clipped horses whose neck you want covered, and riders who like to bring a clean horse in from the field.

If your horse does not need a neck, the Bucas Irish Turnout 50 is enough. In the fill. This rug has 50 g; the 300 + Neck Set has 300 g in the rug and 100 g in the neck and is meant for winter. Outer fabric, lining and fastenings are the same.

How do I wash the rug and neck cover?
By hand or machine at 30 degrees maximum, gentle cycle, with Bucas Rug Wash only. No fabric softener, spinning, tumble drying or dry cleaning. Dry flat or hanging, then treat the clean outer side with Bucas Rug Conditioner.
