Size chart

The correct size is essential for both comfort and performance in equestrian sports. At Maddelin Equestrian, we are happy to help you choose the right size, so that your equipment fits perfectly - whether it's riding apparel, helmets, boots, or accessories.
A well-fitting outfit not only provides more comfort but also better performance in the saddle. Clothing that is too tight or too loose can restrict your freedom of movement and affect your aids. Therefore, we recommend always measuring accurately and using our size charts as a guide.
Our size charts are organized by product category and brand, allowing you to choose as specifically as possible. Since fits can vary by brand, you will find specific information with each product to guide you.

Product Information
The Bucas Freedom Turnout + Neck 100 is a waterproof, breathable turnout rug with a neck and 100 g of fill. It protects not just the back and flanks but the neck as well from rain and wind. It is meant for horses living out in autumn, winter and early spring that can do with some insulation. The main benefit: rug and neck in one purchase, in 600 denier Ripstop with a Dermo-care lining and the slim Freedom cut.
About this turnout rug
With a standard turnout rug the neck stays uncovered. Often that is no problem, but in persistent rain and wind it is exactly where a horse gets wet. The Freedom Turnout + Neck 100 is supplied with a neck, so that area is covered too. Bucas describes the cut as Classic + Neck.
The 100 g of thermobonded polyester sits between the light 50 g and the 300 g winter fill: enough to take the edge off cold and wind, without the warmth of a heavy winter rug. The outer is waterproof with a hydrostatic head above 5000 mm and breathable at more than 3000 g/24h/m², so moisture from the horse can escape. It is woven as 600 denier Ripstop, a weave that makes tears less likely and stops them spreading. The Dermo-care lining is silky, wicks moisture away and keeps the coat smooth.
We like to be precise about the neck. Bucas supplies this rug with a neck, but does not specify whether it is detachable, nor whether it is filled. So we do not claim either. If using the neck separately matters to you, ask us before you order.
The front closure is an overlap T-bar with a hook-and-loop strap. Cross surcingles, a tail flap and a fillet string keep the rug in place, and there are attachment points for leg straps. Like every Freedom, this rug has no shoulder darts: it is the only slim fit Bucas makes. Narrow horses and thoroughbred types take their normal size. Cob types, or horses with a long distance from withers to the front of the chest, may find the fit tight. For them the Bucas Irish Turnout 50 + Neck, with shoulder darts, is the better choice.
A turnout rug is not tied to any discipline. This one serves any horse that lives out, whether you ride dressage, showjumping, eventing or for pleasure.
Key benefits
- Rug and neck supplied together, so no separate neck to find or order.
- The neck is covered too against rain and wind.
- 100 g fill: a middle weight for cold, wet days without heavy insulation.
- Waterproof and breathable, with a Ripstop outer that slows tears from spreading.
- Dermo-care lining that keeps the coat smooth and soft.
- Slim cut without shoulder darts for narrow horses and thoroughbred types.
Practical advice
Size it as you would any Bucas rug: measure from the centre of the chest, over the highest point of the shoulder, to the back of the hind leg, and take the nearest size. A rug that is too big slips sideways, presses on the withers and can rub. Once the rug is on, check that the neck moves freely when your horse grazes. For a broad chest there is the Bucas Chest Extender Standard (801), on request.
With a neck, more of the body is covered. Bear that in mind on mild days. The Bucas Rug Selector label on the rug gives the recommended range; breed, clip, humidity and wind all play a part. Bucas lists no liner connection points for the Freedom, so this rug is not meant to be built up in layers.
Bucas itself states that water can get in along edges and seams, and that in heavy rain it can run down the neck and under the rug. The water-repellent finish wears with weather, use and washing: wash regularly with Bucas Rug Wash and restore the finish with Bucas Rug Conditioner.
When to choose this turnout rug
Choose the Freedom Turnout + Neck 100 for a narrow to average horse that spends a lot of time out in wet, windy weather, and when you want a neck without having to put a combination together.
Other Bucas rugs at Maddelin suit these cases better. A broad horse that needs a neck: the Irish Turnout 50 + Neck or, for winter, the Irish Turnout 300 + Neck Set, both with shoulder darts and 1200 denier Ripstop. No neck wanted: the Freedom Turnout 50 or Freedom Turnout 300, or, with the same 100 g, the Irish Turnout 100 and the Greenline Turnout 100, to which a neck can be added on request. The Bucas Oasis 100 + Neck Set is also supplied with a neck.

Frequently asked questions
Is the neck on the Freedom Turnout + Neck 100 detachable?
That is not specified by Bucas. The rug is supplied with a neck; the manufacturer does not state whether it comes off, nor whether it is filled.
Can I attach a liner underneath?
Bucas lists no liner connection points for the Freedom Turnout. If you want to work in layers, the Irish Turnout and the Greenline Turnout are equipped for it.
How do I measure the right size?
From the centre of the chest, over the highest point of the shoulder, to the back of the hind leg. Take the nearest size: 145 is 6'6 and 155 is 6'9.
What weather is 100 g with a neck meant for?
Cold, wet and windy days when a light rug is no longer enough. The Bucas Rug Selector label on the rug shows the recommended range.
How does it differ from the Freedom Turnout 50 and 300?
Those have 50 g and 300 g of fill and no neck. Outer, lining, closure and the cut without shoulder darts are the same. This rug has 100 g and comes with a neck.
How do I wash a rug with a neck?
Hand wash or machine wash at 30 degrees maximum, gentle cycle, with Bucas Rug Wash only. No fabric softener, no spinning, no tumble drying, no dry cleaning. Dry flat or hanging at room temperature, then apply Bucas Rug Conditioner to the clean outer side.
Does this rug come in other sizes or colours?
At Maddelin it comes in Navy, in 145/195/6.6 and 155/205/6.9. Other sizes can be ordered on request.
