Measure your horse the Bucas way: from the centre of the chest, over the highest point of the shoulder, to the back of the hind leg. Choose the nearest size. A rug that is too big slips sideways, presses on the withers and can rub. If a broad chest makes you hesitate, Bucas offers a Chest Extender Standard (801), which we can order on request.

A 0 g rug does not insulate. If your horse is clipped, or lives somewhere cold and exposed, it needs fill, and the Freedom Turnout 50 or Freedom Turnout 300 makes more sense. Every Bucas rug carries a Rug Selector label showing the recommended use; breed, coat, humidity and wind all play a part as well.

A plain word on waterproofing: Bucas itself points out that water can get in along edges and seams, and that in heavy rain water can run down the neck and under the rug. The water-repellent finish also wears off with weather, use and washing: wash the rug regularly and restore the finish with Bucas Rug Conditioner.

Choose the Freedom Turnout Light for an unclipped horse you want to keep dry in the rain, for the in-between seasons, or as a light rain sheet alongside a filled winter rug. It suits a narrow to average build.

Another Bucas rug at Maddelin will serve you better in some cases. If your horse is broad in the chest or big through the shoulder, the Irish Turnout 50 with shoulder darts gives more freedom of movement. If you want to be able to add a neck or a liner later on, the Irish Turnout or the Greenline Turnout is also the way to go. For a horse that is hard on its rugs there is the Atlantic Turnout 50 in 1680 denier ballistic nylon. And for changeable sun and showers there is the Bucas Sun Shower.

Place the rug slightly forward, then slide it back in the direction of the coat. Fasten the overlap T-bar at the chest first and press the hook-and-loop strap down. Next, do up the cross surcingles. Leg straps clip to the attachment points provided. The fillet string runs under the tail. Check that the rug sits straight and the shoulders move freely.

Wash at 30 degrees maximum with Bucas Rug Wash, without fabric softener, and do not tumble dry. Afterwards, treat the clean outer side with Bucas Rug Conditioner.

How do I measure my horse for a Bucas Freedom Turnout Light?

Is a 0 g rug warm?
No. It keeps out rain and wind but adds no warmth. For a clipped horse or cold weather, choose a filled rug.

How does it differ from the Freedom Turnout 50?
The construction is the same: 600 denier Ripstop, Dermo-care lining and the same slim cut. The Freedom Turnout 50 has 50 g of thermobonded polyester fill; the Light has none.

Can I attach a neck or a liner?
For the Freedom Turnout, Bucas lists neither attachment points for a separate neck nor connection points for liners. If you want that option, choose an Irish Turnout or a Greenline Turnout. Within the Freedom line there is also the Freedom Turnout + Neck 100, which is supplied with a neck.

How do I wash this rug?
By hand or in the machine at 30 degrees maximum, on a gentle cycle, using Bucas Rug Wash only. No fabric softener, no spinning, no tumble drying and no dry cleaning. Dry it flat or hanging at room temperature, then treat the clean outer side with Bucas Rug Conditioner.

What weather is it meant for?
Rain and wind on days when your horse needs no extra warmth. The rug carries a Bucas Rug Selector label with the recommended range. Breed, coat and wind also matter.
