Size chart

The correct size is essential for both comfort and performance in equestrian sports. At Maddelin Equestrian, we are happy to help you choose the right size, so that your equipment fits perfectly - whether it's riding apparel, helmets, boots, or accessories.
A well-fitting outfit not only provides more comfort but also better performance in the saddle. Clothing that is too tight or too loose can restrict your freedom of movement and affect your aids. Therefore, we recommend always measuring accurately and using our size charts as a guide.
Our size charts are organized by product category and brand, allowing you to choose as specifically as possible. Since fits can vary by brand, you will find specific information with each product to guide you.

Dogwear

At Maddelin, we believe that the right fit makes all the difference between just riding and truly riding well. Use our size charts as a guide and confidently choose the size that suits you and your horse.
Product Information
The Bucas Freedom Turnout 50 is a waterproof, breathable turnout rug with a light 50 g fill. It keeps your horse dry and takes the chill off rain and wind without the warmth of a winter rug. It is meant for the in-between seasons and for horses living out in their own coat. The main benefit: a thin insulating layer in a light 600 denier Ripstop rug with a Dermo-care lining and a slim cut.
About this turnout rug
There is a gap between a rain sheet with no fill and a proper winter rug, and 50 g is what fills it. On a wet, windy day a horse cools down faster than the thermometer suggests. A thin layer of thermobonded polyester makes up for that, while the rug stays light enough not to turn into a sweat rug the moment the sun comes out. The outer is waterproof with a hydrostatic head above 5000 mm and breathable at more than 3000 g/24h/m².
The Freedom Turnout 50 is made from 600 denier Ripstop, a weave that makes tears less likely and stops them spreading. Against the coat is the Bucas Dermo-care lining: silky, wicking, and made to keep the coat smooth. The front closure is an overlap T-bar with a hook-and-loop strap. Cross surcingles, a tail flap and a fillet string keep the rug in place, and there are attachment points for leg straps.
What sets the Freedom line apart is the fit. It is the only Bucas turnout rug without shoulder darts, a so-called slim fit in the Classic Cut. On a narrow horse or a thoroughbred type that is a plus: you take the usual size and the rug sits close with no spare fabric around the shoulder. On a cob type, or a horse with a long distance from withers to the front of the chest, the same cut can feel tight. The Bucas Irish Turnout 50 will then sit better, as its shoulder darts give room around chest and shoulder.
The Freedom is the Bucas entry-level model. Waterproofing and breathability are the same, but the outer is lighter than the 1200 denier of the Irish Turnout, the closure is hook-and-loop rather than a magnetic Snap-lock, and no attachment points are listed for a separate neck or for liners. A turnout rug is not tied to a discipline: it serves any horse that lives out, from dressage and showjumping to eventing and pleasure riding.
Key benefits
- Light 50 g fill that takes the chill off rain and wind without heavy insulation.
- Waterproof and breathable, so your horse stays dry and moisture can escape.
- Ripstop outer that slows tears from spreading.
- Dermo-care lining that keeps the coat smooth and soft.
- Slim cut without shoulder darts for narrow horses and thoroughbred types.
Practical advice
Bucas measures from the centre of the chest, over the highest point of the shoulder, to the back of the hind leg. Take the nearest size. A rug that is too big slips sideways, presses on the withers and can rub. For a broad-chested horse there is the Bucas Chest Extender Standard (801), available on request.
Which fill when? Think 0 g for rain without cold, 50 g for cool, wet transitional days and 300 g for winter or a clipped horse. The Rug Selector label Bucas attaches to every rug shows the recommended range; breed, clip, humidity and wind decide the rest. Bucas lists no liner connection points for the Freedom, so do not count on a layering system with this rug.
Bucas itself states that water can get in along edges and seams, and that in heavy rain it can run down the neck and under the rug. The water-repellent finish wears with weather, use and washing. Regular washing with Bucas Rug Wash, followed by Bucas Rug Conditioner, keeps the rug in working order.
When to choose this turnout rug
The Freedom Turnout 50 suits a narrow to average horse living out in autumn and spring, or an unclipped horse that only needs a little help in winter when it is wet and windy.
Look at another Bucas rug at Maddelin if your horse is broad through chest and shoulder (Irish Turnout 50, with shoulder darts), if you want to be able to add a neck or liner (Irish Turnout or Greenline Turnout), or if you need a tougher outer: the Atlantic Turnout 50 has 1680 denier ballistic nylon, a Click'n Go closure and leg straps included. If no warmth is needed, take the Freedom Turnout Light; for winter, the Freedom Turnout 300.

Frequently asked questions
How do I work out the size for a Bucas Freedom Turnout 50?
Measure from the centre of the chest, over the highest point of the shoulder, to the back of the hind leg and take the nearest size. Size 145 is 6'6, size 155 is 6'9.
What weather is a 50 g turnout rug for?
Cool, wet and windy days when a rain sheet is too little and a winter rug too much. The Bucas Rug Selector label on the rug gives the recommended range. Coat, breed, humidity and wind all play a part.
How does it differ from the Freedom Turnout Light and the Freedom Turnout 300?
Only in the fill. The Light has 0 g, this rug 50 g and the Freedom Turnout 300 has 300 g. Outer, lining, cut and closure are the same.
Can I add a neck or a liner?
For the Freedom Turnout, Bucas lists neither attachment points for a separate neck nor connection points for liners. If that matters to you, an Irish Turnout or Greenline Turnout is more suitable.
How do I wash the rug?
Hand wash or machine wash at 30 degrees maximum, gentle cycle, with Bucas Rug Wash only. No fabric softener, no spinning, no tumble drying, no dry cleaning. Dry flat or hanging at room temperature and treat the clean outer side with Bucas Rug Conditioner.
Will this rug fit a broad horse?
Not always. Without shoulder darts the cut can be tight on cob types. For them the Irish Turnout 50 is a better choice.
Are other sizes available?
In stock at Maddelin: 145/195/6.6 and 155/205/6.9. Other sizes can be ordered on request.
