The Bucas Atlantic Turnout 50 is a waterproof, breathable turnout rug with a light 50 g fill and an outer in 1680 denier ballistic nylon. It is made for horses that spend a lot of time out and are not kind to their rugs: in a herd, among hedges or along the fence line. Its main benefit is the combination of a highly tear-resistant outer fabric with the Click'n Go front closure and a moisture-wicking Dermo-care lining.

About this turnout rug

With a horse that is hard on rugs, the outer fabric makes the difference. Bucas describes the Atlantic range as durable, reliable rugs designed to provide protection across a wide range of temperatures. With a 50 g fill this is the light version, for wet, chilly days when your horse needs to stay dry without much added warmth. The nylon is very densely woven in what is called a ballistic weave, a half panama construction, which makes it tear-resistant in all directions. At 1680 denier it is also the heaviest outer fabric in the Bucas selection at Maddelin, compared with 1200 denier on the Irish Turnout and 600 denier on the Freedom and the Greenline. The fabric is waterproof to more than 5000 mm hydrostatic head and breathable to more than 3000 g per 24 hours per m².

At the front is the Click'n Go, the patented Bucas front closure. The principle: easy for people, difficult for horses. It is combined with a magnetic Snap-lock, which holds the rug correctly in position and replaces hook and loop on the chest. The Irish and the Greenline fasten with a T-bar and Snap-lock, the Freedom with a T-bar and hook and loop.

Inside is a Dermo-care lining with Stay-dry properties. Dermo-care is a silky lining that wicks moisture: it helps the coat dry after washing or work and keeps it smooth and soft. Stay-dry refers to that wicking action: the lining keeps your horse dry.

Shoulder darts give freedom of movement around the chest and shoulder. Underneath are cross surcingles and, unlike the Irish, Greenline and Freedom, the Deluxe leg straps are included. A tail flap and a Deluxe fillet string, which stops the rug blowing up over the back in the wind, round things off. There are attachment points for a neck, and the rug is compatible with Bucas Liners, Quilts and Coolers.

Practical advice

Measure your horse from the centre of the chest, over the highest point of the shoulder, to the back of the hind leg, and choose the nearest size. A rug that is too big slips to one side, presses on the withers and can cause rubs.

At 50 g this is a light rug. Because the Atlantic is compatible with Bucas Liners, Quilts and Coolers, you can fasten a layer underneath when the weather turns colder rather than buying a second outer rug. The Rug Selector label Bucas attaches to the rug gives the recommended temperature range; breed, whether the horse is clipped, humidity and wind all play a part. And however waterproof the fabric, in heavy rain water can run in along the neck, edges or seams.

Wash by hand or in the machine at a maximum of 30 degrees, gentle cycle, with Bucas Rug Wash only and no fabric softener. Do not spin, tumble dry or dry clean; dry flat or hanging. The water-repellent finish wears off with weather, use and washing, and is restored with Bucas Rug Conditioner on the clean outer side. Manure, urine and grease from the coat attack the coating, so regular washing is the better habit.

The Atlantic Turnout 50 suits horses that are hard on their rugs, horses kept in a herd, and owners who want one strong outer rug that grows with liners.

If you need a warm winter rug in the same fabric straight away, the Bucas Smartex Extra, with 300 g and a Stay-dry fleece lining, is the better choice. If your horse is gentle on rugs, the Bucas Irish Turnout 50 in 1200 denier Ripstop will do, and for a narrow horse there is the Bucas Freedom Turnout 50, the entry-level Bucas model with a slim fit and no shoulder darts.
