Rugs

How to measure your horse: using a soft tape measure, measure from the centre of the chest, over the point of the shoulder, horizontally along the body to the furthest point of the hindquarters. This is the total length.

Always check the brand's size chart. A rug size in cm (for example 125 or 145) is the back length for most brands, and how it converts to feet differs per brand. Some brands, such as Bucas, also measure differently. That's why every rug comes with the brand's own size information.

The Boss Equestrian Elaria Show Blouse Smoking Check is a white competition blouse for women riders, with a checked Smoking panel and a stand-up collar. Boss Equestrian makes the model in Sportpower Stretch and describes the fabric as breathable and quick-drying. You wear the blouse at a competition as a neat top layer that keeps moving with you while you ride. Available in white, in sizes XS, S and M.

About this competition blouse

For the composition Boss Equestrian gives two statements in the product specifications provided: 73% polyamide with 27% elastane, and 75% cotton with 20% polyamide and 5% elastane. Which statement belongs to the base material and which to the checked Smoking panel is not given. Both are taken over here as they were provided, without assigning them to a component.

Functionally Boss Equestrian describes the fabric as breathable and quick-drying, with full freedom of movement. You notice that above all in the saddle, where your shoulders and arms move constantly: when you take up the rein, over a fence, or during a longer test. Quick-drying means here that the material moves moisture to the outside and therefore stays damp for less time. If you wear a show jacket or a body protector over it, the stretch in the material comes in useful.

Boss also gives LFS 50 for this model. That is a designation from the manufacturer about the material used. The specifications provided give no test method or standard with that value, and no CE marking or EU declaration of conformity has been found for this product either. The designation is therefore left here as Boss's statement, without any further comment on it.

The finishing stays restrained. The stand-up collar carries the handwritten Boss logo in a feminine version, applied in caviar glitter. The button fastening runs down to the chest: you pull the blouse on over the head and close only the upper part of the front panel. The checked Smoking panel contrasts with the plain white and gives the Elaria its own face within the Boss line.

The Elaria was developed as a competition blouse and is not tied to a single discipline. Bear in mind that turnout rules differ by discipline, by federation, by level and by country and are revised regularly; so always check the current rules of your own federation before you wear a model at a competition. In showjumping the FEI prescribes, among other things, a white collar and a white tie, stock or choker; in Belgian dressage a white shirt is prescribed. If you are looking for something for daily training, a technical training shirt is a more logical choice: the checked panel and the glitter finishing come into their own above all at a competition.

White competition kit lives a short and intensive life. Take the blouse out of your bag only on competition day and pull your jacket over it as late as you can: that keeps sand and stable dirt off the sleeves and the collar. Boss Equestrian rules out bleaching in the washing instructions, so deal with a stain quickly and at a low temperature, and not with chlorine-based products. The glitter detail on the collar is the most delicate part: wash the blouse inside out on the delicate programme and let it dry in the air, because the tumble dryer is ruled out. Whether the Elaria is meant to be combined with a separate stock tie or a tie is not in the specifications provided.

Choose the Elaria if you want a white blouse at a competition that is not entirely plain: the checked Smoking panel gives it a bit more character, while the whole stays quiet. It suits women riders in dressage, showjumping or eventing who want a top layer with stretch and a neat collar. If you are after the most sober white possible, the Minou Show Shirt Double B is the closer match: that one is plain, with a stand-up collar and a short zip. If you mainly ride at home, a technical training shirt is more practical. Which kit is permitted in your class is set by the rules of your own federation.

Close it right to the top so the stand-up collar stays standing around the neck, and let the checked panel lie flat under your jacket. Boss Equestrian states a delicate wash at 30 degrees, without bleaching, without ironing, without dry cleaning and without the drum. That last point also spares the glitter finishing on the collar.
