Between two sizes? We usually recommend the larger size, unless stated otherwise on the product. In our experience, Italian brands (such as Animo, Cavalleria Toscana and Vestrum) tend to come up small.

Rugs

How to measure your horse: using a soft tape measure, measure from the centre of the chest, over the point of the shoulder, horizontally along the body to the furthest point of the hindquarters. This is the total length.

Always check the brand's size chart. A rug size in cm (for example 125 or 145) is the back length for most brands, and how it converts to feet differs per brand. Some brands, such as Bucas, also measure differently. That's why every rug comes with the brand's own size information.

The table below converts the total length from feet to cm. This conversion is the same for every brand.

Product Information

The Premiere High Tech stirrup pads are replacement pads for stirrups, in size 12 cm and in black. The stirrup pad is the insert in the tread of your stirrup: the part your boot stands on and the part that wears first. With a new pad that contact surface is whole again, without your having to replace the stirrups themselves. Meant for riders whose stirrup tread is 12 cm wide.

About these stirrup treads

A stirrup rarely wears out as a whole. What does wear out is the pad in the tread. It takes the weight of your leg at every stride, and sand, grit and water keep getting in between your boot sole and the stirrup. After a few seasons of intensive riding such a pad goes slippery, works loose or gets pressed in, and then it no longer lies flat. A new pad brings that part of the stirrup back to its original state; the stirrups themselves simply stay in use.

What Premiere states about these pads is limited. The size is fixed — 12 cm — and so is the colour black. The material, the shape of the contact surface and the weight are not published by the brand, nor is the question of which stirrup models this pad is matched to. High Tech is the name Premiere gives this version; we draw no properties from it that are not documented. What you can check yourself is the size, and that is what decides whether the pad fits.

Alongside this version, the range holds the Premiere Non Slip stirrup pads, likewise in 12 cm. That name points to a contact surface that lets the boot slide less. This High Tech version is black and therefore shows up little in a dark tread. Whether you take this one or the Non Slip is not a question of size: both are 12 cm. The difference lies in the version and the colour.

Replace your pads as soon as the contact surface is visibly smooth, the pad splits, or it starts to shift in the tread. Do it on both sides at once: two pads of different age feel different left and right. While you are cleaning your tack, keep an eye on the tread of your stirrups as well, because sand left under the pad grinds the material away faster. A stirrup pad is small enough to keep a spare set in the grooming box, so that a worn pad does not catch you out on the morning of a competition.

Measure your stirrup before you choose a pad: lay a tape measure in the tread and measure the clear width between the two branches of the stirrup. If it does not come to 12 cm, this is not the right size. Always replace the pads two at a time, so that left and right feel the same. When you swap them, wipe the tread out, because sand under the pad works like sandpaper. If you ride a lot out hacking or on sand, check the pads every season; for a stirrup that mostly hangs in the tack room a yearly look is enough. If the frame of the stirrup itself is bent or worn hollow, a new pad will not help against that.

These pads are meant for riders who use stirrups with a 12 cm tread and whose existing pad has gone smooth or loose. The discipline makes no difference: dressage, showjumping, eventing and recreational hacking all ask for a pad that lies flat. If you would rather have a version whose name points to an anti-slip profile, the Premiere Non Slip stirrup pads in 12 cm are the other choice in our range. If the stirrup frame itself is bent or worn hollow, choose a new stirrup instead of a pad. And if you want to protect your saddle flap from the stirrups during transport, you do not need a pad but a stirrup cover.

Take the stirrup off the leather and lift the old pad out of the tread. Wipe sand and grit out of the stirrup, so that the new pad can lie flat all over. Lay the pad in the tread, press it down all round and then check that it no longer moves. How the pad is held in place on this model is not stated by Premiere. Care: rinse with water, let air-dry and use no solvents.

What is a stirrup pad?

The insert in the tread of a stirrup: the surface your boot stands on. It takes more punishment than any other part of the stirrup and you can replace it separately.

Which size do I need?

The size of the pad has to match the inside width of the tread of your stirrup. This pad is 12 cm. Measure that width before you choose.

Do these pads fit every stirrup?

No. They are meant for a 12 cm tread. With a narrower or wider tread the pad will not stay in place, or it will not go in at all.
