Product Information

The Veredus Absolute is a boot for dressage work and flatwork, available from us for the front leg and for the hind leg. An anatomically shaped Polyflex shell takes the knocks, with a lining of neoprene and lycra underneath. You choose between elastic straps with a quick-release tip or the Easy Strap hook-and-loop fastening. Meant for riders who want to shield their horse on the flat.

About these boots

What this model is meant for. Veredus places the Absolute under dressage in its own range and describes it as a boot for dressage and flatwork. That has a consequence you are better off knowing beforehand: at international dressage events, boots and bandages are forbidden in the arena and must already be off before you ride into the space around the competition arena. So a dressage boot is a product for training and warming up, not for the test itself. In the warm-up arena and in the training arena it is allowed.

How it is built. The outer shell is made of Polyflex, the elastic polyurethane from Veredus. That shell is anatomically shaped and lays a firm layer over the tendon on the inside of the leg. Between it and the leg sits a lining of neoprene with lycra. Mechanically it comes down to this: if the horse catches itself with the other leg, that knock lands on the shell first and is spread over a larger surface, with the neoprene lining as cushioning in between.

Two fastenings under one name. The Front Elastic and Rear Elastic versions close with two elastic straps with a quick-release tip. Veredus links that choice to freedom of movement and to quick fitting and removal. The Rear Velcro version is the Easy Strap version: there you close with hook-and-loop, which lets you tune it more closely per horse. Apart from that, shell and lining are the same on both. So which you choose depends on whether you prefer ease of fastening or fine adjustment.

Front leg or hind leg. The front leg version covers the tendon and runs down to the fetlock. The hind leg version closes around the fetlock and is shorter. They are not interchangeable: a front leg boot does not belong behind, and the other way round. If you want to use the hind leg version in international jumping classes as well, requirements as to shape do apply there, and Veredus does not state this model as a jumping model. In that case, check for yourself whether the boot meets the criteria: no more than 20 cm at its longest point, no more than two fastenings, and a single hard shell on the inside that bends around the leg without effort.

What is not documented. For this model, Veredus states no weight per boot and no washing instructions. In international jumping classes, everything worn together on one leg may weigh no more than 500 grams, wet included; so that figure cannot be worked out from what the manufacturer states.

Use the Absolute for what Veredus intended it for: dressage work, flatwork, warming up and daily training. Put it on with even tension, without pulling hard; you should still just be able to slide a finger between boot and leg. After a few minutes of walking, check that it has not slipped, because a boot that slides away no longer does its job. Wipe sand and sweat off the inside after every use, certainly on the white version. If you work on a sand surface, look between shell and lining as well: grains left in there rub. Veredus states no washing instructions, so avoid the machine as long as that is not confirmed.

Choose the Absolute if you work mainly on the flat: dressage schooling, riding lessons and warming up, with a horse that catches itself now and then. Take the elastic version if you want to be able to switch quickly between horses, and the Easy Strap version with hook-and-loop if you want to set the fastening precisely per horse. If you jump, you are better served by a model that Veredus itself states for jumping, such as the Olympus Vento or the Carbon Gel Vento in our range. If you are only after fetlock protection for young jumping horses, the Young Jump Vento is intended for that.

According to the Veredus instructions, you hold the boot between the two fastening tips, set it on the cannon and slide it up until the fetlock stops it. Close the lower elastic strap first: pull it forwards and towards you, then hook it in so that the lining overlaps neatly. Then do the upper strap. Finally, check that the top edges are level, that the lining overlaps properly and that the boot sits close against the fetlock. On the Easy Strap version you close with hook-and-loop in the same order.

May I keep these boots on in the dressage test?

No. At international dressage events, boots and bandages are forbidden in the arena and must be off before entering the space around the competition arena. In the warm-up arena and in training you may use them.

What is the difference between Elastic and Velcro?

Only the fastening. Elastic closes with two elastic straps with a quick-release tip, Velcro is the Easy Strap version with hook-and-loop. Shell, lining and shape are the same.

Can I use a front leg boot behind as well?

No. The front leg version is longer and follows the tendon, the hind leg version closes around the fetlock. You choose the right version per leg.

Which size does my horse need?

Measure the circumference halfway up the cannon. For the front leg, M is 19.5 to 22 cm and L is 22.5 to 24 cm; for the hind leg, M is 22 to 24 cm and L is 24.5 to 26 cm.

What is the shell made of?

Of Polyflex, an elastic polyurethane. Underneath it sits a lining of neoprene with lycra.

How do I clean them?

Veredus states no washing instructions. Wipe the inside after use and let the boots air dry, away from any heat source.

How much does one boot weigh?

Veredus states no weight. For international jumping classes, everything on one leg together may weigh no more than 500 grams, wet included.
